Brampton Beast News Release
READING, PA - The Brampton Beast picked up a huge 2 points after a hard fought 4-2 road victory against the Reading Royals as they hosted their annual "Pink in the Rink Night" at Santander Arena. The Beast handed the Royals their first ever defeat on the promotional night held in honor of breast cancer awareness, dropping their record to 7-1 all time when wearing the special pink jerseys.
60 minutes of hockey has been the message in the Beast locker room and that's exactly what they delivered in front of a contingent of die-hard Beast fans that made the trip down from Brampton, Ontario.
The first period was largely a back and forth defensive battle before a holding penalty on Royals defensemen Zach Davies sent the Beast to their first powerplay opportunity of the night. Beast points leader Chad Painchaud would then kick off the scoring when he was Johnny-on-the-spot, burying a goal top shelf after the initial Mathew Maione pointshot was stopped and the rebound landed on his stick at the 18:07 mark of the first period.
The second period has been nothing short of explosive for the Beast this season and tonight was no exception. The period started off on a sour note when the Royals leading goal scorer, Pat Mullane, was able to shake the defence and net his 13th goal of the season while playing shorthanded barely 3 minutes into the frame.
That's when rookie Tyson Fawcett, the lone all-star selection from the Brampton Beast this season, would take over the game. He would first take advantage of a strange bounce that saw him pick up a loose puck all alone in the slot and show off his quick hands by faking out Royals' netminder Connor Knap and guiding the puck into the back of the net for his 6th goal of the season. Fawcett wasn't done yet and barely 2 minutes later, he would find the back of the net again. This time it was fellow rookie Dustin Ekelman who made a great defensive play by blocking a shot which sprang Fawcett on a breakaway that would see him bury his second goal of the night and 7th of the season over the shoulder of Knap at the 9:12 mark of the period.
The Royals would trim the deficit back to one goal after Sean Wiles would net his 8th goal of the season on the powerplay due to a questionable delay of game penalty. A 3-2 lead heading into the third period made for a tense feeling in the building and provided the backdrop for goalie Trevor Cann to shine.
Cann would go on to stop all 15 shots he faced in the third period and it was Stephon Thorne who would eventually make a great defensive play in his own end to poke the puck away from a Royals player in the Beast zone before streaking up the wing and ending any hope of a Reading comeback by finding the back of the empty net with just over 30 seconds remaining.
The words to "O Canada" could be heard throughout the arena during the dying seconds of the game from the passionate Beast fans who made the trip down to cheer on their hometown team all evening.
Tyson Fawcett and Trevor Cann would earn the first and third stars respectively after Fawcett recorded a 2 goal and +2 night while Cann found himself making an impressive 39 saves on 41 shots against, earning his 7th win of the season.
The Beast have now secured 5 out of a possible 8 points on the road and will finish off the current 5-game road trip by squaring off against the very same Reading Royals tomorrow evening back at Santandor Arena. Puck drop is slated for 5:05 PM EST. You can catch that game live at 4cornersradio.ca.
The Beast will then return home the weekend of January 16-18 for a three-game set against the Montreal Canadiens ECHL affiliate the Wheeling Nailers. Friday's game will feature a Guns and Hoses themed game, where the Brampton Fire and Police Departments will square off in a charity game raising funds for Regen Brampton at 5:30, with puck drop for the Beast at 7:30. Tickets can be purchased online at bramptonbeast.com or by calling 905-564-1684.
