Mavericks Take 1 Point in 4-3 OTL to Americans

January 10, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kansas City Mavericks News Release

Allen, TX - The Missouri Mavericks collected 1 point from their Saturday night battle with the Central Division-leading Allen Americans at Allen Event Center, finishing the contest with a 4-3 overtime loss.

After an aggressive start to the game that piled up 26 penalty minutes before 5 minutes in the period had passed, the Mavericks were first to hit twine as Team Captain and veteran left wing, Sebastien Thinel, stuffed his own rebound home past Allen net minder Riley Gill at 10:22. Andrew Courtney and Josh Brittain were credited with the assists on Thinel's opening goal.

Not a even minute later, the Mavs expanded their lead 2-0 over the Americans when Kriss Hogg, in his third game in a Missouri sweater this season, lasered a puck past Gill up high, assisted by Chris Crane and Patch Alber at 11:03.

It was not until the final 2 minutes of the first frame that the Americans made their mark on the scoreboard, cutting the Mavs lead in half 2-1 via Ian Schultz (18:07).

The Americans went on to score 2 more unanswered goals in the second period to first tie the game 2-2 at 3:34 with a goal by defenseman Nolan Descoteaux and then take the lead 3-2 at 14:39 via defenseman Tyler Ludwig.

The Mavericks started the third period on the power play, with 1:02 left in man-advantaged time from a late second period penalty to Tyler Ludwig (tripping), but needed 1 extra second to notch the game-tying goal at 1:03 from Josh Brittain. Patch Alber and Andrew Courtney assisted on the play for the 3-3 scoreboard.

Unable to capitalize on 3 additional power play situations through the third period, the Mavs then traded short-handed places with the Americans twice in the final 10 minutes of regulation, but battled back to force the game decision to overtime and secure at least 1 point from the contest.

Only 7 seconds into extra time, Missouri's Jared Brown was called for hooking, giving Allen a substantial 2-minute power play opportunity, which they ran with and scored the game-winning goal at 1:15 of OT. Gary Steffes was credited with the tally for the 4-3 OT Americans victory.

The Mavericks will return to Allen Event Center tomorrow afternoon for a 4:05pm (CST) puck drop against the Americans. Missouri plays their next home game on Saturday, January 17th at Independence Events Center when the Mavericks will welcome the legendary Hanson Brothers to the IEC!
