Manchester Monarchs News Release

ELMIRA, N.Y. - The Manchester Monarchs fell to the Elmira Jackals, 5-3, Saturday night at First Arena.

With the loss, the Monarchs (11-6-0-1) dropped the first of 14 meetings with the Jackals (3-10-2-0).

The Jackals got on the board first when Kenton Miller scored his 4th goal of the season at 13:29 of the first period. A wayward shot off the stick of Greg Amlong hit the glass behind Monarchs goaltender, Jonah Imoo, but bounced directly to Miller in the slot, where the former Monarchs forward buried a quick shot through the 5-hole of Imoo to put Elmira up, 1-0.

The Monarchs tied the game when Derek Arnold scored his 3rd goal of the season at 2:17 of the second period. Arnold took a pass from Craig Wyszomirski in the slot, and sent a backhander past Jackals goaltender, Andy Iles, to tie the score at 1-1.

Manchester took the lead when Joey Diamond netted his team-leading 8th goal of the season at 3:11 of the middle frame. Diamond threw the puck towards the slot from the right corner, and the puck redirected off a Jackals defender through the 5-hole of the Elmira netminder, making the score, 2-1, Monarchs.

Elmira knotted the game at 2-2 when Greg Betzold scored his 3rd goal of the season at 13:35 of the second period. Betzold was posted in the shooting slot on a face-off in the right dot, and sent a wrister over the blocker of Imoo to even the score.

The Jackals regained the lead when Mike Radja scored his 2nd goal of the campaign at 15:52 of the second period. Imoo made the initial stop on a Vaclav Karabacek slapshot from the point, but left a juicy rebound in the slot that Radja sent through the 5-hole, giving the Jackals a 3-2 lead.

Elmira added to their advantage when Steven Kaunisto scored his 3rd goal of the season at 3:15 of the third period. Kaunisto had nothing but a yawning cage to shoot at after a shot from Radja was redirected to him just inside the left dot, and beat a diving Imoo to make the score, 4-2, Elmira.

The Monarchs cut into the Jackals lead on the power play, when Jordan LaVallee-Smotherman scored his 3rd goal of the season at 11:17 of the third period. LaVallee-Smotherman found the puck on his stick after a David Kolomatis shot from the point was blocked directly to him in the slot, and the Monarchs forward fired a wrister past the glove of Iles to make the score, 4-3, Elmira.

The Jackals put the game on ice when Kaunisto potted an empty-net-goal at 19:42 of the final frame from center ice.

The Monarchs return to the ice Sunday afternoon (4:05 p.m.), when they finish their two-game set with the Jackals in Elmira.
