Steel Reel

The Steelheads extended their unbeaten streak to six games on Friday night, holding off a furious push from the Allen Americans in the closing minutes to secure a 3-2 win and earn their third straight victory on home ice. Saturday, the Steelheads and Americans will complete their short two-game series at CenturyLink Arena, where the Steelheads have a 4-1-1 record all-time (playoffs included) against Allen.

Kyle Jean's fourth goal of the season, a short-handed tally in the third period, held up as the winner for the Steelheads on Friday night. Caleb Herbert and Joe Faust also found the back of the net, and Branden Komm stopped 20 of 22 shots to secure his third win of the season. Idaho is 9-2-1 in the last 12 games and is tied atop the Mountain Division with Colorado with 22 points.

Sure-Handed...

Kyle Jean's short-handed tally Friday night was Idaho's second of the season and second in their past two home games. The Steelhead power play has earned headlines this season, but their penalty kill is heating up as well. Idaho killed off six of seven Allen opportunities last night and has stopped 23 of 25 short-handed situations in the past seven games to improve to eighth in the league. Jean had two short-handed goals last year, one in the regular season and one in the playoffs.

How 'bout Herbert...

Caleb Herbert has been an all-around force since rejoining the Steelheads from AHL Texas on November 12th. Herbert, along with Will Merchant, created the pressure that led to the second goal of Friday's game and Herbert's third of the season. In the four games since his return, Herbert has two goals, two assists, and 19 penalty minutes.

Point-per-game players...

Chad Costello and Greger Hanson combined for a power play goal on Friday to continue their hot play. The goal gave Hanson 19 points (8-11-18) in 18 games this season, while Costello now has 24 points to rank third in the ECHL, recording a point in all but three games this year. Costello and Hanson have combined for seven goals and 24 points in 12 games career games against Idaho (playoffs included).
