Memphis Redbirds News Release

DURHAM, NC - The Memphis Redbirds dropped game three of a six-game series to the Durham Bulls on Thursday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park by a final score of 8-7.

The Memphis offense struggled through the first six innings against Durham starter Tommy Romero, notching just two hits against the right-handed pitcher. After Romero was chased before the top of the seventh, the Redbirds revved the offense in gear.

With a right fielder Moises Gomez's 25th home run of the season and a first baseman Luken Baker two-run blast, Memphis suddenly found itself with a 3-2 lead. After allowing Durham to tie the game in the bottom half of the seventh, more power surged in the eighth.

Following a leadoff single from third baseman Irving Lopez, center fielder Scott Hurst stayed hot, drilling a two-run homer straight to right field to put the Redbirds right back in front, 5-3. The home run was Hurst's fourth of the season, all coming in the last three weeks.

After falling behind 6-5 in the bottom of the eighth, Memphis catcher Pedro Pages hit a game tying solo home run to lead off the ninth, his first career Triple-A home run.

Starter Steven Matz made his third MLB Rehab appearance with Memphis and lasted 3.1 innings, struck out four batters and allowed just two hits. On his 59th and final pitch of the night, the left-handed pitcher hung a sinker up and in to Durham third baseman Curtis Mead for a two-run homer.

Reliever Connor Thomas dominated in relief, striking out seven hitters through four innings of work. The left-handed pitcher allowed three runs on four hits to earn a no-decision. With two Durham runs in the bottom of the tenth, Memphis was walked off for the first time this season.

The Memphis Redbirds (44-37) return to action on Friday, July 8 against the Durham Bulls (44-37) at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, North Carolina.
