Four-Run Fifth Earns Iowa Second Consecutive Win

July 7, 2022 - International League (IL)
Iowa Cubs News Release

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The Iowa Cubs (36-44) recorded 12 hits to take down the Indianapolis Indians (38-41) winning their second consecutive game by a score of 6-3, Thursday at Victory Field.

The I-Cubs and Indians traded blows through the early innings, each scoring once in the third and fourth frames. Iowa opened it up in the fifth, scoring four runs on RBI singles from Dixon Machado, Narciso Crook and Darius Hill.

The scoring would slow down from there, as both team's pitching locked down after the top of the fifth. Cam Sanders earned his first career Triple-A win, tossing five innings of two-run ball. He allowed just three hits while walking three and striking out three in the outing.

Sanders was followed by Major League rehabber Daniel Norris, who allowed a leadoff single, but worked around it with a strikeout to throw a scoreless inning.

On the other side, the Indians used four relievers to get through the final five innings. The four of them combined to keep Iowa off the board, allowing just four total hits while walking one and striking out five.

Despite allowing a run in the ninth, Iowa's bullpen was up to the task, closing out the final four innings to earn the win and take a 2-1 series lead over the Indians.

POSTGAME NOTES:

- Nick Madrigal went 1-for-3 with a run scored and a run driven in in his first Major League rehab appearance for Iowa. Daniel Norris, also on a rehab assignment, spun a scoreless inning of relief.

- Dixon Machado went 4-for-5 with a run scored and a run batted in out of the leadoff spot tonight, recording his first and the team's seventh four-hit performance of the year.

- Despite recording 12 hits tonight, Iowa had just one extra-base hit. A double from Trent Giambrone was Iowa's only extra-base hit tonight, knocking 11 singles combined with one walk and one error from Indy.

Iowa and Indianapolis will play game four of the series tomorrow night, with first pitch from Victory Field scheduled for 6:05 PM CT. For more information and tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
