WooSox Recognize Local Baseball Star Morgan Lucas as Hometown Hero
July 7, 2022 - International League (IL)
Worcester Red Sox News Release
2022 is shaping up to be the biggest year for advancements in women's baseball. There are eight women playing collegiate baseball this year, and all-girls baseball teams are popping up all over the country. Still, the sport is not widely accepted, or accessible to many girls, tons of whom are told to "switch to softball."
That is not the case for 14-year-old Rutland native Morgan Lucas, the Worcester Red Sox' Hometown Hero honoree on July 6.
Morgan was honored for her continued dedication to the sport and for her efforts to play at the highest level possible.
Morgan is a utility player, specializing in first base, third base, pitcher, catcher, and left field. She was the only girl on her Little League team and is currently the only girl on her middle school and AAU (Strike Zone) teams.
Morgan, who started playing because of her brother, believes that there has been progress in how girls in baseball are perceived.
"People let you play now," she said. "They don't judge you."
Morgan is also a member of the all-girls baseball team the Boston Slammers. The Slammers will travel to the Baseball for All National Tournament in Mesa, Arizona, on July 20 - 24. Through the auctioning of WooSox President Charles Steinberg's Polar Park suite, the WooSox were able to donate $2,000 to Morgan and the Slammers, which will give Morgan and her teammates the ability to travel to the tournament.
She has played with the Slammers in this tournament before and says that this time she is looking forward to meeting new people and is "hoping [the Slammers] can win the tournament."
Morgan's goal is to keep playing for as long as she can, and she hopes that other girls "keep doing what [they're] doing."
Morgan's honoring is not the only time that the WooSox will celebrate women's accomplishments in sports this season. The WooSox will host a "A Celebration of Women in Sports" on Saturday, July 23, with special pre-game ceremonies and in-game promotions dedicated to honoring the current and future women making strides in sports both on and off the field.
