Toledo Mud Hens News Release
PAPILLION, NE.: Storm Chasers starter Marcelo Martinez retired the first 19 batters he faced to set the tone on the mound, and Omaha backed him with plenty of offense as they defeated the Toledo Mud Hens, 6-1, to capture their fourth straight victory at Werner Park on Thursday evening.
Martinez (2-4) picked up his first win since Opening Day, twirling 7 and 1/3's fantastic frames, yielding two hits, a run, and fanning four Mud Hens hitters. Derek Hill ended his perfect game bid by legging out an infield base knock in the top of the seventh.
Dairon Blanco opened the scoring for the Storm Chasers by swatting his seventh homer to commence the bottom of the third inning. Nick Pratto would also single and score in the frame on an RBI double from Michael Massey to bump the Omaha lead to 2-0.
The Chasers struck for two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Brewer Hicklen singled and Freddy Fermin coaxed a walk from Michael Mariot. Both runners touched up on a run-producing double from Ivan Castillo to increase Omaha's advantage to 4-0.
Mariot (3-1) took the loss for the Hens, allowing seven hits, four runs, two walks, and racking up six strikeouts over five innings.
Fermin crushed a two-out, solo blast opposite Angel De Jesus in the bottom of the sixth, his fifth of the year, to make it 5-0 through six stanzas.
Blanco drove in his second run of the day on a sacrifice fly in the seventh, plating Castillo, for a 6-0 Storm Chasers edge.
Brendon Davis broke up the shutout by slamming a solo shot in the eighth opposite Martinez. Davis has now hit safely in four of his last five assignments.
Akil Baddoo notched a base hit in the ninth to extend his on-base streak to 12 consecutive games. He is maintaining a .409 batting average over this stretch and has hit safely in ten of the contests.
Shea Spitzbarth worked around a base hit and kept Omaha off the board in the home half of the eighth.
NEXT UP: The Mud Hens and Storm Chasers will resume their series on Friday evening at 8:05 p.m. EST.
