ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Jerad Eickhoff dazzled over 7.0 innings of one-run ball, but the I-Cubs broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Indians last night, 4-1. Travis Swaggerty began the scoring for the Indians in the second inning, sending a two-out home run into the right-field corner. Eickhoff had surrendered just two hits up until the seventh inning, when a double by Greg Deichman and RBI single by Jackson Frazier tied the game at 1-1. After a leadoff single by Deichman and a walk to follow kicked off the ninth inning, John Hicks launched a one-out, no-doubt homer to left field to give Iowa its first lead of the game. Rodolfo Castro walked to lead off the bottom of the ninth, but the next three batters were retired in order to end the game.

HOME GROWN: Jerad Eickhoff was dominant against I-Cubs batters last night, allowing just two baserunners in 6.0 scoreless innings before a pair of hits in the seventh scored the game-tying run and took him out of line for his sixth win this season. The 7.0-inning outing was the right-hander's longest since tossing 8.0 innings on 5/8/19 with Philadelphia at St. Louis. It was also the second consecutive game where Eickhoff fanned seven batters, tying his season high. Each of his last five starts with Indianapolis have been for 5.0-or-more innings, and in those starts he is 3-0 with a 3.04 ERA (8er/27.2ip) with 25 strikeouts.

EYE ON THE BALL: Kevin Newman singled off former teammate and 2017 International League Pitcher of the Year with the Indians, Steven Brault, last night to extend his hitting streak to a team-high and International-League leading 12 games among active streaks. It is his longest hitting streak since hitting safely in 19 consecutive games with Pittsburgh in 2019 and his longest with Indianapolis since a 12-gamer in 2018. Since the second game of his first rehab assignment on 5/19 (1), when his hitting streak began, he is hitting .413 (19-for-46) with three doubles, six RBI and only six strikeouts. He also has registered a perfect fielding percentage in 81.0 innings between second base and shortstop in 13 total games.

BAE'S BACK: After going hitless in three consecutive games, his first such streak since April, Ji-Hwan Bae has bounced back in a big way with multi-hit performances in each of his last three games, including two hits last night to lead the Indians offense. He has reached base safely in 59 of his 72 games played and ranks fourth among all International League qualifiers with a .313 average (87-for-278) this season. Along with batting average, the 22-year-old ranks among league leaders in runs scored (T-3rd, 53), hits (T-4th, 87), stolen bases (T-4th, 20) and total bases (T-9th, 131).

TONIGHT: After Iowa tied up the series with a ninth-inning victory yesterday, the Indians will look to retake the lead tonight at Victory Field. This is the second series between the two teams this season and the first at Victory Field after Indy took four of six games at Principal Park earlier this year. For the Indians today, Mike Burrows will take the mound for his fourth Triple-A start, second at Victory Field and first against the I-Cubs. Countering for Iowa today will be Cam Sanders, who surrendered six runs in just 2.1 innings in his last start on 7/1. Sanders has never faced Indianapolis.

BACK TO THE FUTURE: Mike Burrows will take the mound for Indianapolis tonight after Major League Baseball announced today that he was added to the National League roster of the 2022 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game, making him the first player from Indianapolis to earn a roster spot since first baseman Will Craig in 2019. The seven-inning, prospect-loaded contest will take place on Saturday, July 16 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. Burrows, who is currently rated as Pittsburgh's No. 10 prospect by MLB Pipeline, was promoted from Double-A Altoona to Indianapolis on June 16 following a stellar start to the season. At the time of his promotion, he was tied for the Eastern League lead with 12 starts and also ranked sixth among league leaders with a 2.94 ERA (17er/52.0ip) and .199 average against, seventh with 69 strikeouts and 10th with a 1.10 WHIP. The 22-year-old has made three starts with the Indians and is 0-1 with a 6.00 ERA (8er/12.0ip) and 12 strikeouts. His best Triple-A outing came on June 25 vs. Memphis when he allowed just one run over 4.1 innings.

WILSON WINNING: The Indianapolis Indians today announced right-handed pitcher Bryse Wilson as their June Player of the Month after he provided a spark to the starting rotation with three wins and three quality starts in four appearances. The 24-year-old went 3-0 with a 2.49 ERA (7er/25.1ip) in June. In all four of his starts, Wilson held the opposition to two runs or less while throwing at least 5.0 innings. He displayed strong command with a 1.03 WHIP - ranking fifth among International League qualifiers for the month - and a 5.25 strikeout-to-walk ratio with only four walks compared to 21 strikeouts. Wilson was Pittsburgh's starting pitcher for the nightcap of today's doubleheader at Cincinnati after tossing a quality start in the big leagues on July 2.

THIS DATE IN 1996: The Indians put up 11 runs in the second inning en route to a 14-4 win at American Association Eastern Division leading Buffalo. Eric Owens and Roberto Mejia led the offense with four RBI on three hits each and a combined three home runs. After Mike Remlinger allowed four runs on five hits, the Indianapolis bullpen shut down Buffalo with three hitless innings.
