Henderson to Play in SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game
July 7, 2022 - International League (IL)
Norfolk Tides News Release
Major League Baseball today announced the rosters for the SirusXM All-Star Futures Game, which is scheduled for July 16, 2022 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California. Norfolk Tides infielder Gunnar Henderson will represent the Orioles organization for the American League team.
Henderson, 21, has played 25 games with the Tides so far, hitting .274 (26-for-95) with 25 runs, five doubles, a triple, five home runs, 16 RBI and 17 walks, which makes his slashing totals .386/.505/.891. Recently, he hit for the cycle the night before his 21st birthday on June 28 vs. Gwinnett, the first Tide to do so since Timo Pérez on June 9, 2000. In his 2022 season overall, he's batting .298 (75-for-252) with 66 runs, 16 doubles, four triples, 13 home runs, 51 RBI and 58 walks in 72 games, slashing .429/.548/.977.
Born on June 29, 2001, Henderson is the youngest player the International League has seen this season, topping Logan Glass (Charlotte, DOB: April 9, 2001) and Wander Franco (Durham, DOB: March 1, 2001). Henderson (20 years, 11 months, 9 days) is the youngest player to debut for the Tides since Michael Montecon (19 years, 6 months, 0 days), who had one at bat in 2021.
This will be the seventh time as an Orioles affiliate (since 2007) that a Norfolk Tides player participated in the All-Star Futures Game after playing for the Tides in the same year. He's the first since Marcos Diplán, who made it last year. The others to play in the exhibition game were Chance Sisco (2016), Zach Davies (2015), Henry Urrutia (2013), Chris Tillman (2009) and Garrett Olson (2007).
The All-Star Futures Game is an annual baseball exhibition game hosted by Major League Baseball (MLB) in conjunction with the mid-summer MLB All-Star Game. A team of American League-affiliated prospects competes against a team of National League-affiliated prospects. From the inaugural 1999 event through 2018, teams of prospects from the United States faced off against teams of prospects from other countries.
