Mavs Hold off Eagles, 3-2

INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks drew closer to the top spot in the Central Hockey League's Turner Conference with a 3-2 victory over the Colorado Eagles Tuesday night at Independence Events Center. Simon Watson tallied two points on a goal and an assist in the winning effort and Robby Nolan made 28 saves to pull the Mavericks within two points of the top spot in the conference.
Missouri took hold of the game in the late goings of the first period, as Simon Watson netted his 15th goal of the season at the 13:07 mark of the opening period. The goal was assisted by Blake Forsyth and Derek Pallardy. The Mavericks were granted a two-man advantage with just under a minute remaining in the first period. The Mavericks took advantage when Ryan Jardine found a pass from Simon Watson and rifled it into the back of the net with three seconds remaining on the clock, doubling the Mavericks lead to 2-0. Watson got his second point of the game on an assist on the goal. Ray DiLauro was also credited with an assist on Jardine's goal. The Mavericks ended the period with eight shots on goal to the Eagles' six.
The Mavs offensive onslaught continued early on in the second period as Carlyle Lewis added his name to the score sheet with a goal six minutes into the period. Mike Berry and Todd Griffith were given assists on the goal. The Mavericks top ranked penalty kill unit showcased its strength when Cole Ruwe and Derek Pallardy were whistled for penalties within a minute of each other Through the end of two periods, the Mavericks held a 3-0 advantage over the Eagles.
Colorado drew closer on the scoreboard early in the period on a goal from Matt Glasser just 30 seconds into the period, making the score 3-1. Matt Hanson was given an assist on the goal. The Eagles made it even more interesting with seven minutes to go when Dan Sullivan redirected a shot from Kyle Peto from the point making it 3-2, Mavericks. The Mavericks would hold off a late Colorado power play for the victory.
With the victory, the Mavericks drew within two points of first place and now sit in a tie for third place with the Bloomington PrairieThunder. The Mavericks finished the night one-for-four on the power play. The Eagles would finish one-for-six with man power advantages. Robby Nolan stopped 28 of 30 shots by Colorado. Andrew Penner stopped 20 of 23 Missouri attempts on the other end for Colorado.
The Mavericks hit the road for the next 10 days as they will travel to south Texas to face the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees this Friday and then take a short trip over to Laredo to face the Laredo Bucks on Saturday night. Then on Wednesday, the Mavs head back north to face the Bloomington PrairieThunder on Wednesday. The Mavs return home for a four games in five nights home stand where they will face the Wichita Thunder on March 25 and 26, the Mississippi RiverKings on March 27 and wrap up the home schedule against the Thunder on March 29.
