Gems Have Three Game Win Streak Snapped, Fall to Mudbugs 5-4
March 8, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Dayton Gems News Release
The Dayton Gems traveled to Bossier-Shreveport Tuesday night to face the MudBugs for the first game of a four game road trip. The Gems came into the game carrying a three game winning streak and had an opportunity to secure a playoff berth with a win. Dayton fell short of clinching a playoff berth, suffering a 5-4 defeat to the Bossier-Shreveport MudBugs.
The first period was one dominated by both goalies. The Mudbugs goalie, Ryan Munce, managed to stop all nine Gems shots, while Derek MacIntyre was nearly as perfect, stopping nine out of the ten shots he faced. The lone goal of the first period came off the stick of MudBugs forward Justin Aikins. Aikins goal was his 14th of the season and came with 6:18 to play in the first. The MudBugs led the Gems after one period, 1-0.
The second period was a different story. It didn't take long for the MudBugs to add to their lead. At the 15:54 mark in the second period, Travis Clayton put the MudBugs up 2-0. The MudBugs weren't done adding to their lead; Shane Hart put the Mudbugs up 3-0 with 14:14 minutes left in the period. The Gems cut the lead to 3-1 on a goal scored by forward Chris Lipsett. Lipsett was assisted by Damian Surma and Matt Szypura. The Gems trailed after two periods, 3-1.
The Gems cut into the MudBugs lead midway through the third period when Mike Vaskivuo put one home with 11:50 left in the third period. A little over two minutes later Vaskivuo tied the game at 3-3 with his second goal of the game, Vaskivuo's second goal came with 9:29 left in the third period.
The 3-3 tie did not last long, fifteen seconds later at the 9:12 mark; Travis Clayton scored his second goal on the evening to put the Mudbugs ahead at 4-3. Clayton was not done scoring adding another goal with 2:39 remaining in the third to give the MudBugs forward his first hat trick on the season and put the MudBugs ahead, 5-3.
Brett Lutes goal in the final moments of the game was enough to pull the Gems to within one. But it was too little, too late as the Gems were defeated 5-4.
The Gems will look to get back into the win column as they continue their road trip Thursday as the team travels to Mississippi to face the RiverKings. The Gems will try to clinch a playoff berth with a win Thursday. The game is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
The Kettering Medical Center is proud to be the official title sponsor of the Gems for the 2010-11 season.
