Komets win Eastern Conference Crown

Fort Wayne Komets News Release


Fort Wayne, IN --- The Komets took 8 points in 5 games last week to capture the UHL Eastern Conference after 73 games of the 2002-03 campaign. The last time the Komets won a conference or division title was 2000-01 when they took the Central Division of the UHL's Eastern Conference. It's the 12th time a division or conference title has been won by the Komets in their 51-year franchise history. Upon the conclusion of regular season play, the Komets will face the Port Huron Beacons in a best-of-five first round when the playoffs begin the first week of April. Playoff dates are yet to be determined.

Fort Wayne now sets their sights on the UHL regular season championship and the Tarry Cup with 3 regular season games remaining. The Tarry Cup battle has come down to the Komets (73 gp, 42-21-10, 94 pts) and the Quad City Mallards (72 gp, 40-22-10, 90 pts). The last time the Komets won a regular season championship was 1986-87 in the IHL for their 5th season title.

With the 4 wins during the week, the Komets have tied their high water mark for wins in a regular season at 42, set in the 2000-01 season. The Komets have surpassed their UHL record of 90 points in a UHL season set in 2000-02 with their current total of 94 points (see "Fort Wayne Komets UHL Records" below).

The games (4-1-0): Monday night the Komets started the week in Kalamazoo for the traditional St. Patrick's Green Ice Game. The Komets clipped the Wings 4-1. Komet newcomers Joe Forte and Josh Tataryn each notched their first pro goals while rookie goalie Cory Campbell recorded the win making 21 saves on 22 shots. Wednesday the Komets returned home to upset the visiting Missouri River Otters 7-3 in front of 8,657 Fort Wayne fans. Bobby Stewart recorded his 3rd 4-point night (2g, 2a) and Colin Chauk registered his first 4-point outing (1g, 3a). Defenseman Marc Barlow passed 3 assists for his first career 3-point night. Campbell earned his 2nd straight win in as many starts stopping 19 of 22 shots. Friday the Komets doubled up Adirondack on Fort Wayne ice 6-3. Goalie Tom Lawson backstopped the Komets to their 4th straight win making 28 saves on 31 shots in the last meeting of the season with Adirondack (FW 4-2-0). The Komets directed 49 shots at the IceHawk net, the most shots in a game for the Komets this season. Saturday in Flint the Komets dropped a 3-2 decision in the first of a home-and-home set with the Generals. Sunday the Komets completed the home-and-home series with a 6-3 win over the Generals from Flint. Barlow registered his first 4-point game as a pro (1g, 3a) and 2nd 3+ point game of the week. Chaulk notched his 2nd 4-point game of the week (4a). Campbell earned his 3rd straight win stopping 28 shots in his 7th Komet appearance of the season.

This week.....the Komets finish the regular season with 3 games this weekend. Friday the Komets travel to Flint for a 7:30pm faceoff. Saturday the Komets move on to Rockford for an 8:05pm start (Fort Wayne time). Sunday the Komets return home to host the Rockford IceHogs at 5:05pm in the regular season finale. The Komet's annual "End of Season Player Awards" will be awarded immediately following the game.

Komets have 4 straight home wins and are unbeaten at home in regulation 8 straight.

Milestones.....Dustin Virag notched his 100th career point (2nd assist of game) Friday night, 3/21 vs Adirondack....Bobby Stewart has skated 299 career games.

Forte heads back to School.....the Komets have removed winger Joe Forte from the roster. Forte, 23, was added to the lineup March 11 after completing his 5th year of collegiate play at Brock University (CIS). The rookie skater is going back to Brock University to complete his education after appearing in 5 games during his brief stay with the Komets (1g, +1).
