Alaska Aces News Release
SAN DIEGO, California â The Anchorage Aces picked up their first road victory in seven weeks, then struggled to find the net in back-to-back losses to playoff-bound Bakersfield and San Diego.
Anchorage began its eight-game, 18-day odyssey to finish out the year with a stunning 4-2 win in Fresno Friday night, scoring twice in the game's final minute, including the winner by Kevin McNeill, his second of the night, with 53.9 seconds remaining. Christian Soucy stopped 40 of 42 shots to earn the victory, snapping a six-game road losing streak and giving Perry Florio a win in his first game behind the Aces' bench in an enemy arena after a 7-3-1 homestand. Bakersfield roared out of the gates the following night, taking a 3-0 first period lead and rolling to a 5-1 victory in a game marred by four ejections and 117 minutes in penalties. Soucy had another 40 saves in defeat while Dean Larson notched his 27th goal of the season, matching his total from a year ago. Sunday in San Diego, Ryan Person matched his season-high with 45 stops but the Aces were overwhelmed by the Gulls and shut out for the third time this year 4-0. Anchorage was outshot 49-20 in losing for the 15th time in 17 road games.
The Aces enter the week at 20-44-3 overall, 8-5-1 under Florio's direction, and one point ahead of Long Beach in the race to avoid the WCHL cellar. Anchorage tangles with Bakersfield this Friday at 6:00 p.m. AST before heading to Long Beach for a two-game series that likely will decide fifth place in the league standings. Saturday's tilt begins at 6:00 p.m. AST, with Sunday's finale slated for 3:00 p.m. AST.
All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.anchorageaces.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI. The Aces are offering 2003-04 season tickets at a 15 percent discount (a savings of $86.40) through March 31. For more information, please call 258-ACES [2237].
