IceCaps Sail Past Bears

Hershey Bears News Release

ST. JOHN'S, NL. - Patrice Cormier and Scott Kosmachuk scored second-period goals and assisted on two others, and the St. John's IceCaps rode four unanswered goals to a 5-1 victory over the Hershey Bears on Saturday night at Mile One Centre.

It was a repeat performance for IceCaps forward Chase Balisy, as he again scored the first goal of the game. At the very end of St. John's first power play of the night, the rookie took a shot from the inside of the right circle that snuck past Pheonix Copley at 5:03 for his team-leading 19th of the season.

The Bears were handed two short two-man advantages later in the period, and they would capitalize as the third power play wound down. Dustin Gazley would enter the IceCaps zone with speed down the right wing and drop a pass behind him. Jim O'Brien caught the pass, stepped into a one-timer and ripped the puck past the stick side of goaltender Eric Comrie at 12:42.

In the second period, Cormier would restore the IceCaps' lead on their second power play of the game. Getting loose at the net front, Cormier jabbed a backhander off of the left post and in behind Copley at 3:06.

Later in the period, with the teams skating four-on-four, the IceCaps struck twice in 12 seconds to take a big lead into the intermission. J.C. Lipon found a puck in traffic and snapped it past Copley from the slot at 17:54 for a 3-1 lead, and after the ensuing faceoff Kosmachuk skated in, grabbed his own dump-in and chipped a shot past Copley at 18:06 for his 14th of the season.

Julien Brouillette would score on a two-man advantage with time winding down, rounding out the scoring in a chippy game that featured 96 combined penalty minutes.

Copley turned aside 29 of 34 shots and fell to 15-4-3 on the season, while Comrie earned his first AHL win with 21 saves in 22 shots.

The Bears' record now stands at 44-21-5-3 (96 points), and the magic number to clinch the East Division title remains at four points.
