Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
PORTLAND, Maine. - Matt Murray made 40 saves and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins had 11 different players record a point in a 5-2 win over the Portland Pirates on Saturday at Cross Insurance Arena.
With the Pirates holding the 1-0 edge entering the second, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton evened the score six minutes into the period thanks to the third goal in two games from Tom Kuhnhackl. The Penguins forward set up camp on the far post to gather the rebound from a Carter Rowney shot gone wide and nudge it by goalie David Leggio.
Kuhnhackl then helped put the Penguins ahead for the first time in the match at 12:28 as he fired a wrist shot from the left circle that pinballed off the shoulders of Leggio and Rowney before banking into the net.
The Penguins stretched their lead to 3-1 with 2:52 gone in the third period when Conor Sheary stripped his man of the puck at the near circle of Portland zone and slipped a pass in front for Bobby Farnham to deposit his sixth marker of season.
Alexander Bolduc pulled Portland within one at 12:56 with his team-leading 21st tally of the season, only to have Jayson Megna re-establish the two-goal lead for the Penguins 1:34 later with his team-best 22nd goal.
Completing a 2-on-1 rush with Matia Marcantuoni, Dominik Uher put the game firmly out of reach and made the final score, 5-2, with 3:46 remaining in regulation.
After being held scoreless in their previous two meetings versus Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, the Pirates took a 1-0 lead at 12:26 of the first after Eric Selleck pulled wide of the Penguins defense and tucked a forehand shot past the right pad of Murray.
Murray's 40 stops made during regulation were a career-best for the netminder. He made 42 saves in a 2-1 overtime win at Lehigh Valley on Oct. 29, 2014. Leggio turned aside 18-of-23 shots for Portland.
