Amerks Complete Weekend with 5-1 Loss in Toronto

April 11, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Rochester Americans News Release

(Toronto, ON)... The Toronto Marlies scored three goals in the second period and added two more in the third to defeat the Rochester Americans by a 5-1 score in the back-end of a weekend home-and-home series Saturday afternoon at Ricoh Coliseum. The Amerks complete the season series with a 2-7-1-0 record against the Marlies and fall to 28-39-5-1 on the year heading into the final week of the 2014-15 regular season.

Justin Kea provided the lone goal for Rochester, tipping in Jerome Leduc's point shot midway through the third period to deny Toronto rookie goaltender Antoine Bibeau his sixth shutout of the season. Newcomer Matt Garbowsky also recorded an assist on Kea's lone goal, giving the former RIT captain and Hobey Baker Award finalist his first professional point in his sixth game with Rochester. Anthony Peters got the start in goal for the Amerks and finished with 29 saves on 33 shots in the losing effort.

Byron Froese and William Nylander each recorded a goal and two assists while Matt Frattin (1+1), Connor Brown (1+1) and Brendan Leipsic (1+1) all finished with two-point efforts. Bibeau posted 28 saves in the win for the Marlies, who moved into sole possession of the eighth and final playoff spot in the AHL's Western Conference with just four games left on their regular season schedule.

After a scoreless but penalty-filled first period in which the teams combined for 61 penalty minutes, Toronto broke the stalemate 4:16 into the middle frame with Frattin finishing off a nifty passing play for his team-leading 24th goal of the season. Nylander led the rush into the Rochester zone and left a drop pass for Froese, who quickly one-touched a cross-ice feed to a streaking Frattin. The Marlies forward caught the pass in stride and beat Peters with a shot from below the right circle to give Toronto a 1-0 lead.

Leipsic staked the Marlies to a 2-0 advantage midway through the frame when he spotted a loose puck beside the Rochester net and jammed it home for his fifth goal in three games. Toronto worked the puck around the offensive zone until Brown let a shot go from the left point that would pinball in front of Peters before Leipsic shoveled it past the Amerks netminder.

Toronto added its third goal of the period with just two seconds left on the clock on a redirection from Nylander, who got his stick on a T.J. Brennan slap-shot from the top of the crease to send the Marlies into the intermission up 3-0.

Kea trimmed the Marlies' lead to a pair at 12:34 of the third period when he deflected Leduc's shot from the high slot up and under the crossbar to ruin Bibeau's shutout bid. With the assist, Leduc now has points in back-to-back games and has three assists through his first six games of April. Garbowsky also registered his first professional point with an assist on Kea's second of the season.

Froese restored Toronto's three-goal cushion on the power-play with 2:53 remaining in the third and Brown iced the game for the second straight day when he put one into the empty net just 56 seconds later to give the Marlies the 5-1 win.

The Amerks will close out the 2014-15 regular season with a three-in-three weekend, which begins Friday, April 17 when they host the Utica Comets in a North Division showdown on Fan Appreciation Night at The Blue Cross Arena. The 7:05 p.m. contest will be the 10th and final meeting between the two teams this season and will be broadcast live on FOX Sports 1280 Rochester. The game will also be televised live locally on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel 26 and on 323 for viewers in the Buffalo market.
