Pens Push Pirates to 5-2 Loss

Portland, Me. - The Portland Pirates (37-26-7-2) could not hold on to an early lead and fell to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (42-23-3-4) by a tally of 5-2 on Saturday night at the Cross Insurance Arena. It was Autism Awareness night for the Pirates, who donned special jerseys for the occasion featuring multi-colored puzzle pieces on the trim.

Erick Selleck opened up the scoring with a goal at 12:26 in the first stanza, assisted by Brendan Shinnimin and Philip Samuelsson. The Pirates held that narrow lead until 5:59 in the middle period, when Tom Kunhackl netted the tying goal assisted by Carter Rowney and Dominik Uher. The Penduins took the lead with a flukey goal off the chest of Rowney at 12:28 assisted by Kunhackl and Dumoulin.

The Penguins increased their lead to 3-1 at 2:52 in the third on a goal from Bobby Farnham, assisted by Conor Sheary. Alex Bolduc cut into the lead at 12:56 to give the Pirates a goal, assisted by Lucas Lessio. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton scored their fourth of the night when Jayson Megna found the back of the net at 14:30, assisted by Bryan Rust and Nick D'Agostino. They netted one more for insurance at 16:14 off the stick of Uher, assisted by Matia Marcantuoni and Alex Boak.

Matt Murray (25-9-3) had a fantastic night between the pipes, blocking 40 of 42 Pirates shots. David Leggio (8-15-1) got the start in net for the Pirates, blocking 18 of 23 shots from the Penguins.

The Pirates and Penguins will square off again at 3 p.m. tomorrow afternoon at the Cross Insurance Arena. The game will be Kids Club Day and Salty Pete's Birthday celebration.
