Ice Dogs Set to Begin 2003-04 ECHL Season

Long Beach Ice Dogs News Release


LONG BEACH, Ca. – The Long Beach Ice Dogs begin their first year in the ECHL with 3 games in 3 nights as they travel to Roanoke, Johnstown and Wheeling this week. A team that returns only 1 player from last year's roster, scoring sniper Craig Lyons, the Ice Dogs will be looking to jump out to an early start against 3 teams it has never played. 2nd year Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations, Kevin Kaminski, is putting the finishing touches on the final roster that will feature a solid core of young players.

Last Weeks Highlights:

10/10/03 > Long Beach 6 @ Fresno 3

Eric LaPlante and Nathan Horne each had 2 goals for the Ice Dogs, who took game one of the home-and-home preseason series with Fresno. Long Beach netminder T.J. Aceti had 18 saves on 19 shots through 2 periods. The game was played at the Gateway Ice Center.

10/11/03 > Long Beach 3 vs. Fresno 4 (SO)

The Fresno Falcons got even with the Ice Dogs Saturday night, winning a sudden death shootout at the Glacial Garden Ice Center in Lakewood, Ca. Long Beach local, Nick Ganga, had a goal and 2 assists for the Ice Dogs who tied the score at 3 with under 4 minutes to go in the game. Ice Dogs goaltender, Mike Dowers, came up big with 7 saves in OT and stopping 5 of 7 shootout attempts, despite taking the loss. He finished with 22 saves.

This Weeks' Games:

10/17/03 > Long Beach @ Roanoke

The Ice Dogs travel to Roanoke Virginia to take on the Express in the season opener. This will mark the first ever meeting between the clubs. The Express were 2nd in the league in scoring last year, with an average of 3.68 goals a game and had the 5th best powerplay.

10/18/03 > Long Beach @ Johnstown

The Ice Dogs will take on the Johnstown Chiefs Saturday night as they continue their East Coast swing. The Ice Dogs will be looking to gain the upper hand against one of the original members of the ECHL as they faceoff at the Cambria County War Memorial.

10/19/03 > Long Beach @ Wheeling

The Ice Dogs will be playing their 3rd game in 3 nights when they take on the Wheeling Nailers on Sunday. The game will also mark the 3rd straight Ice Dogs opponent that will be faced for the first time in franchise history. The Nailers finished last season with a record of 28-41-3 but will be looking to turn things around under first year head coach Pat Bingham.
