Express Set to Open 2003-04 Season

ROANOKE, VA – The Roanoke Express completed its preseason schedule on Saturday night, and is now gearing up for the regular season, which opens this Friday.

PRESEASON ACTION

The Express competed in two full-length preseason games, and also participated in a three-team, round robin exhibition to make up its four preseason games. Roanoke opened the preseason on Thursday, October 9 when it hosted the Greenville Grrrowl at the Ice Station. The Grrrowl eventually won the high-scoring affair 5-4 in a shootout. The next night, the Express traveled to Altoona, PA to take on the Johnstown Chiefs, and fell 5-2. On Saturday night, Oct. 11, the Express, Chiefs and Wheeling Nailers all congregated at the Cambria County War Memorial Arena in Johnstown, PA for a preseason tournament. Playing 15 minute, running time periods, the Express took on the Chiefs in its first game, and saw Johnstown come away with a 4-0 victory. Roanoke followed that with a mini game against Wheeling and dropped a 3-0 decision to the Nailers.

UPCOMING GAMES

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2003 vs. LONG BEACH 7:30 p.m.

The Express opens the 2003-2004 regular season against one of the new teams in the ECHL. The Long Beach Ice Dogs are one of eight new teams added to the ECHL from the former West Coast Hockey League, and will make its ECHL debut on Friday night at the Roanoke Civic Center against the Express. Of the eight new teams in the league, Roanoke plays four of them during the season.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2003 at Wheeling 7:30 p.m.

Roanoke plays its first road game of the 2003-2004 season on Saturday night, October 18 at the Wheeling Civic Center. The Express and Nailers met once during the preseason in a mini-game at Johnstown, PA and the Nailers emerged with a 3-0 victory. Last season Roanoke and Wheeling went head-to-head twice, both times at the Roanoke Civic Center, and the Express finished with a 1-0-1 record against the Nailers. The first game resulted in a 3-2 shootout loss to Wheeling on November 9, and the Express collected a 4-2 win on March 14.

ROSTER ANNOUNCED

The 2003-2004 Roanoke Express roster was set on Oct. 13, and features nine players returning from last year. Those returning are: Shawn Limpright, Dan Carlson, Rick Kowalsky, Blair Stayzer, Joe Dusbabek, David Silverstone, Duncan Dalmao, Tim O'Connell, and Josh Barker. Joining the team this season are forwards Doug Scatchard, Jeremy Kyte, Andrew McPherson, and Tom Kotsopoulos, along with defenseman Dan Carney, Kevin Bergin, Dan McNeill, and Julius Halfkenny. Roanoke enters the season with two new goaltenders as well, with David Belitski and Jason Wolfe guarding the nets.
