Augusta Lynx News Release

The Augusta Lynx played a pair of pre-season games this weekend against the expansion Gwinnett Gladiators, and although they didn't come away with a win, they did come away with a good idea of what the team needs for the regular season.

"I think we know what we need to do to get better," said Stan Drulia, the team's Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations. "We've got a week until the season starts to work on things."

The club started the pre-season with a contest at Gwinnett's brand new Arena at Gwinnett Center. The game was closed to the public, but still provided some exciting hockey. Augusta led 1-0 on Matt Dzieduszycki's first period power play goal, followed by a second period marker from Scott Kelman to double up the lead. Gwinnett climbed back into the game with a pair of goals from veteran Cam Brown. In the third period, the Gladiators were awarded a penalty shot when the Lynx pushed their net off its moorings to prevent a scoring chance. Brandon Dietrich scored with just 43.3 seconds left on his attempt to give Gwinnett the 3-2 win.

Andy Kollar played two periods of solid hockey for the win, collecting 32 saves. BJ Strongman took the loss, making 20 saves in the third period. Adam Munro picked up the win for Gwinnett with 18 saves.

Saturday night in Augusta, the Lynx once again propelled themselves to a two-goal lead. This time Louis Goulet opened the scoring, followed by Todd Bennett early in the second period. Gwinnett, however, would put three past Jason Saal to take a 3-2 lead before Todd Nowicki scored on the power play to even the game at 3-3 just before the end of the second period. The third frame, however, was all Gwinnett. Three goals put the game out of hand for a 6-3 final, and Chris Durno and Kris Goodjohn each had two goal nights. Defenseman Shawn Weiman chipped in a pair of assists in his Lynx debut.

Lynx Cut Two, Add New

After Friday night's exhibition game, the team released forward Yuriy Mikhalov and goaltender BJ Strongman. Defenseman Shawn Weiman was signed to the team and played Saturday night against Gwinnett after being released from San Antonio's training camp.
