Aces Already ECHL Power - At the Gate

October 13, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – More than 7,000 fans turned out at Sullivan Arena over the weekend for a pair of preseason games, continuing a trend that has seen the Alaska Aces rise to the top of the ECHL in several key areas of ticket sales.

The Aces have sold 1,218 season tickets to date, with 11 days remaining before their season opener against the Fresno Falcons October 24. With a total of 811 having been sold last year, Alaska ranks number one in the league with a 150% season ticket renewal rate. Last week, the Aces became the third team in the ECHL to reach the magic number of 500 new season tickets (the difference of 407 from a year ago accounts for the fact that a certain percentage of last year's season ticket-holders did not renew). Single-game tickets will be made available for sale to the public Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. For more information, please call 258-ACES.

Alaska split its preseason series with Trenton over the weekend, losing on a goal with 12.6 seconds remaining Friday before rallying for a 3-2 shootout victory on Saturday. Shane Palahicky accounted for the lone Aces goal Friday while Mike Scott and Wes Dorey scored to give Alaska a 2-0 lead Saturday. Kimbi Daniels registered the game-winner in the shootout after the Titans had forced the game into overtime. Attendance soared over the 3,500 mark each night.

"The atmosphere felt more like a playoff game than the preseason," said head coach Davis Payne. "I can't imagine what it's going to be like once we hit February and March, the fans were just awesome."

The Aces pared their roster down to 20 shortly before practice today. The final cuts included former UAA standouts Eric Lawson and Petr Chytka as well as Jan Bohac, Corey Dean, Justin Schabes, and Mike Forsland.

Alaska continues training camp tomorrow and Wednesday at Sullivan Arena, with practices scheduled from 9:00-11:00 a.m. The season opener against Fresno will be the first of a three-game series at Sullivan October 24-26. The six-game homestand to open the year continues as the Peoria (Ill.) Rivermen invade Sullivan for the first of three tilts on October 29. All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.alaskaaces.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
