Kansas City Mavericks News Release

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - The Kansas City Mavericks (15-9-1-1) got back to their winning ways in emphatic fashion, snapping a four-game losing streak against the Tulsa Oilers (13-9-4-2) on Friday night at the Silverstein Eye Centers Arena, with a 6-1 victory.

The first period was a bit unusual as the Mavericks had several early scoring opportunities but didn't register a shot on goal until 11:40 into the opening frame. That shot was an effective one, however, as Mavericks forward Mark Cooper blasted a one-timer past Oilers goalie Evan Fitzpatrick to put the good guys on the board first for his ninth of the season, and first since returning from injury. The Mavericks continued to work the puck down low and their hard work paid off as Mike Panowyk would bury a rebound a little over two minutes after Cooper's marker, his third of the season, to take a 2-0 lead. That score would hold for the remainder of the period.

Kansas City would take a stranglehold on the game with three tallies in the second period. Panowyk would get his second of the night after fighting off two Tulsa defenders and ripping a backhand past Fitzpatrick. Later on, Nate Widman fired a blast right off the faceoff and snuck his shot through a ton of traffic in front to make it 4-0 Mavericks, his first of the season. Kansas City would keep pouring it on up until the final horn of the frame with CJ Eick netting his fourth of the season, once again directly off of an offensive zone faceoff with just 19 seconds left in the second period.

Things heated up in the third period as these long time foes continued to battle. 10-minute misconducts were handed out to Tulsa's Charlie Sampair and Mike McKee, as well as Zach Fischer of the Mavericks, the latter two after a post-whistle scrap. Tulsa would break Kansas City netminder Mason McDonald's shutout as Ryan Tesink would net the Oilers' lone goal of the night. Kansas City would keep the pedal down as Eick notched his second goal of the evening, using his blazing speed and bodying off a Tulsa defender before sneaking the puck past Ian Keserich, who took over for Fitzpatrick in the final frame.

Kansas City improved their impressive record on home ice to 11-1-0-0. The Mavericks travel to Tulsa for a rematch with the Oilers at the BOK Center Saturday night.
