ECHL Utah Grizzlies

Hawgood's OT Goal Sinks Admirals

March 17, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Utah Grizzlies News Release

Milwaukee, Wisconsin - The Utah Grizzlies and the Milwaukee Admirals renewed old rivalries as the Grizzlies looked to win a game against the Admirals for just the second time in eight meetings and did so in overtime behind Greg Hawgood's OT goal.

The first period was pretty routine until the final minute when some chippy play led to several penalties. It set the stage for the final 40 minutes, which was extremely competitive. In the first period the Grizzlies outshot the Admirals 9-6.

The Admirals started the scoring in the second period with a power play after the flurry of calls that ended the first period and capitalized when Denny Lambert beat Mike Smith. Utah would come right back with a power play goal of their own scored by Dylan Gyori, his fifth goal of the season. Utah's Dan Jancevski would make a little personal history in giving Utah the lead later in the second period when he beat Jan Lasak from center ice for his first ever professional goal in his 142nd game. Utah led 2-1 after two periods.

The scoring stayed absent in the final period until less than two minutes remaining when a blast from Alex Ryazantsev fooled Smith from the blueline tying the game at two goals apiece sending it to overtime.

In overtime, Darren Haydar took a tripping penalty that led to a Utah power play and the troops produced when Hawgood threw a shot towards the net and it hit traffic in front getting by Lasak. For Hawgood it was his third goal in two nights and it tied him for the league lead among defensemen in points.

Three Stars: 1. Greg Hawgood (UT) 2. Mike Smith (UT) 3. Alex Ryanzantsev (MIL)

Next Game: The Grizzlies will host Hershey on Wednesday night at 7:00 PM at the E-Center.
