7-3-1 Homestand Punctuated by Sellout

March 17, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Anchorage Aces split a pair of tense 4-3 decisions with the San Diego Gulls over the weekend in their final two home games of the 2002-03 season.

Anchorage pulled off its most dramatic win of the season Friday night, when Ryan Moren tied the game with 4.8 seconds left in regulation. His second goal of the night forced a shootout, which the Aces captured when Valdemar Pelikovsky beat San Diego goaltender Trevor Koenig in the sixth round. Anchorage fell behind 2-0 and 4-2 Saturday in front of its first sellout crowd since the 1998-99 season, but again rallied to within a goal and had a couple of late chances with the goaltender pulled and time running out before coming up short. Yvan Corbin scored twice Saturday, bringing his league-leading total to 44, although Dean Larson failed to register a point in his final game at Sullivan Arena after dishing out two assists the night before. Nearly 11,000 fans packed Sullivan over the weekend to see the Aces complete their final and most successful homestand of the season.

Despite splitting two games with the high-powered Gulls, who had won six straight entering the series, Anchorage (19-42-3 overall) was overtaken by Long Beach in the WCHL standings after the Ice Dogs squeaked out a pair of one-goal victories over Fresno and Bakersfield. Long Beach (19-39-4) has a one-point lead over the Aces with two games in hand heading into this week. The Ice Dogs will play at home to Bakersfield Wednesday while Anchorage begins an eight-game road trip that will wrap up its season with a Friday night clash at 6:30 p.m. AST in Fresno, where the Falcons are four games above .500 but winless in their last seven contests after being edged 2-1 by Idaho Sunday. Anchorage moves on to Bakersfield Saturday at 6:00 p.m. AST before finishing up a busy weekend (three games, three nights, three cities) with a Sunday matinee in San Diego at 4:00 p.m. AST.

All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.anchorageaces.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.

PROMOTIONS/PRACTICE TIMES

Ptarmigan Elementary and Tudor Elementary will be making field trips to Anchorage practices this week on Monday and Tuesday, respectively. The Aces will practice at Ben Boeke Arena Monday through Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. in preparation for their longest road trip of the season, eight games spread out over 18 days in the four California cities. The Aces will be offering 2003-04 season tickets at a 15 percent discount (a savings of $86.40) until March 31. The 3rd annual Guns N' Hoses game, won by the Anchorage Fire Department March 8, raised $20,000 for the Anchorage chapter of the American Diabetes Association. A check in that amount was presented to the ADA, represented by Dr. Mark Mitchell, during Friday's win over San Diego.
