Wheeling Nailers News Release

DULUTH, GA- After a thrilling start to the season on Saturday, the Wheeling Nailers hit a bump in the road on Friday night. Former Nailer Casey Pierro-Zabotel scored two goals and added an assist, while Mark Guggenberger was perfect on 25 shots, as the Gwinnett Gladiators picked up a 5-0 win at The Arena at Gwinnett Center.

The Gladiators opened their home season with lots of energy, connecting for a pair of goals in the first period. Eric Springer opened the scoring at the 3:20 mark, when he tossed in a wrist shot from the left point, picking the top-right corner of the net. Later in the frame, Springer created offense again, sending Gary Nunn through neutral ice on an odd-man rush. Nunn dropped a pass off for JP Labardo, who roofed a wrist shot for a 2-0 Gwinnett lead after one.

The home team continued its success in the middle stanza. Sean Berkstresser capitalized on a turnover at the 4:34 mark, extending his club's advantage with an unassisted goal that banked its way into the net. Later in the period, the Gladiators lit the lamp for the fourth time in the contest. Brendan Walker flipped a pass low in the zone for Casey Pierro-Zabotel, who used every inch of his frame to lunge the puck out of the reach of Franky Palazzese's right pad.

Jeff Wyer replaced Palazzese at the start of the third period, but was greeted in unfriendly manner by the Gladiators. Pierro-Zabotel cashed in for his second goal in a row, swatting a backhander in from low in the slot. Wheeling poured 11 shots on goal during the final frame, but came up empty, as Gwinnett was victorious, 5-0.

Mark Guggenberger registered the shutout for the Gladiators, stopping all 25 shots he faced. Franky Palazzese took the loss for Wheeling, making ten saves on 14 shots, before Jeff Wyer thwarted three of four attempts in relief.

The Nailers will visit the South Carolina Stingrays on Saturday at 7:05. Wheeling's next home game takes place on November 1st at 7:35 against the Reading Royals.
