DULUTH, Ga. - The Gladiators will open up their 2014-15 home schedule tonight at The Arena at Gwinnett Center against the Wheeling Nailers at 7:35 p.m. This will be the beginning of a six game homestand for the Gladiators as they face five different teams over the next three weeks. Last Saturday, the Gladiators fell in their season opener, 3-1, to the Evansville IceMen. Joel Hanley scored the team's first goal of the season, and his first professional goal, assisted by fellow new Gladiators Garry Nunn and Dan O'Donoghue.
Glads Notes:
On the Roster: The team is comprised of 21 skaters and two goaltenders. 12 are from the United States, while 11 are Canadian-born.
On Age: Rookies Nathan Burns and Dyson Stevenson are the youngest players on the team (they were born on the same day, 7/15/1993, 21 years ago) and seventh year pro, Sean Berkstresser is the eldest at 32 years old. The team's average age of 24.35 makes them the 10th youngest in the 28-team ECHL.
New Faces...: Eight players are return to Gwinnett from last season, and a ninth (Tristin Llewellyn) played for the Gladiators two seasons ago. Alternate Captain Casey Pierro-Zabotel is the most experienced in a Gladiators uniform, with 103 Gwinnett contests to his name.
...New Places: The ECHL expanded to 28 teams as of two weeks ago. Joining the league are teams in Allen, TX; Brampton, ONT; Independence, MO; Moline, IL; Rapid City, SD; Tulsa, OK; and Wichita, KS. Also of note, the Gladiators' NHL affiliate has changed their name beginning this season, to the Arizona Coyotes.
Milestones: Captain Sean Berkstresser played in his 400th professional game last Saturday ... Forward Anthony Perdicaro is three games away from his 300th professional match ... Mike Merrifield sits at 98 professional games ... James McEwan picked up professional penalty minutes 501 and 502 in Evansville on 10/18 ... Joel Hanley scored his first professional goal last Saturday ...
