Malcolm Blanks 'Rays in Home Opener Win
October 24, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release
Greenville, SC - Jeff Malcolm made 22 saves for his first professional shutout on Friday as the Greenville Road Warriors, proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack, defeated the South Carolina Stingrays, 3-0, on opening night at SANDLAPPER Securities Rink at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena.
With the win, the Road Warriors improve to 1-2-0 (two points) on the season and 3-2-0 in home openers since the franchise moved to Greenville in 2010. Chad Nehring, Vinny Saponari and Scott Arnold each scored a goal in front of 5,321 fans in attendance.
The Road Warriors opened the scoring just 8:20 into the first period when Nehring cleaned up Kyle Jean's shot from between the circles for his second goal of the year. Jean and Michael St. Croix recorded the helpers.
Greenville extended its lead to 2-0 at 5:57 of the second when Trevor Parkes found Saponari in the crease, which enabled him to skate past the goal line and bounce the puck off of the back of Stingrays' netminder Adam Morrison.
Arnold sealed the deal at 19:34 of the third on an empty netter.
Greenville finished the game 1-for-3 on the power play and a perfect 3-for-3 on the penalty kill. In addition, the Road Warriors are now 12-for-12 on the penalty kill to begin the season.
Morrison (1-1-0) made 29 saves and suffered the loss. Greenville outshot South Carolina 32-22 and now has outshot the opponent in each of the first three games of the season.
The Road Warriors return to action tomorrow night with a 7:05 p.m. puck drop against the Gwinnett Gladiators in Gwinnett, Georgia. Greenville then heads home for a 7:00 p.m. matchup against the South Carolina Stingrays on Thursday, Oct. 30 at the SANDLAPPER Securities Rink. $5 tickets will be available at the box office while supplies last and it's also Thirsty Thursday, which includes $2 domestic beers, hot dogs, fountain drinks and pretzels.
