ECHL Adirondack Thunder

Gameday: Adirondack at Elmira

February 20, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Adirondack Thunder News Release

TONIGHT'S MATCHUP: Tonight is the eighth meeting of the season between Elmira and Adirondack, with the two teams tied at eight points apiece. The Thunder hold a 3-2-2 record in the previous seven games against the Jackals, including last night's nailbiter, which finished as a 2-1 shootout victory for Elmira. These two teams will meet three more times this season, with the final matchup coming at the Civic Center in early April.

STRAWBERRY FIELDS FOREVER: Adirondack Thunder netminder Drew Fielding made his return to the lineup in a big way with a 43-save effort in last night's shootout defeat. Fielding, who made his first appearance with the Thunder since January XX, improved his save percentage in games played with Adirondack to .955 on the season and lowered his goals against average to 1.38. Fielding was reacquired by the Thunder from the Brampton Beast on Thursday after the Beast signed goaltender Kenny Reiter.

ALL HE DOES IS QUINN: Quinn Smith extended his scoring streak to three games as he scored Adirondack's lone regulation goal in last night's defeat. Smith's goal came with the Thunder on the penalty kill and initially gave the visitors a 1-0 advantage. The Boston College product's goal was his third of the season and gives him three points in his last three games played, dating back to Sunday in Reading.

BIG MAC: Despite the shootout loss, Thunder forward Peter MacArthur found the back of the net in the shootout, his second shootout tally of the season. MacArthur pulled a nifty move on Elmira netminder C.J. Motte and took sole possession of the team lead as the only Adirondack player with multiple shootout goals on the season. Dana Fraser is the only other Thunder skater with a shootout goal, coming on December 31 against Reading.

MEAN DEAN: The Thunder made a transaction yesterday as they acquired defenseman Dean Willmott from the Missouri Mavericks. Willmott has appeared in just two ECHL contests this season with Missouri, but made his professional debut a season ago with 23 games with the Brampton Beast. The Ryerson University graduate collected three points (1-2-3) in his time with the Beast and the 6-3 defenseman adds size to the Thunder blueline.

A TIME TO PENALTY KILL: Adirondack's penalty kill unit has been on fire in the second half of their season and the Thunder have moved into the ECHL's top ten in penalty killing percentage at 85.4 %, good for eighth in the league. Bolstered by a stretch of 17 perfect penalty killing efforts from their last 21 games, the Thunder have vaulted 11 spots in the league standings from 19th, where they sat in early January.
