Independence, Missouri - An empty-net goal late in the third period sealed the Americans fate, as the Missouri Mavericks defeated Allen 4-2 on Friday night in Independence, Missouri.

Josh Holmstrom's shorthanded goal, his 12th of the season in the second period turned out to be the game winner for Missouri, as the Mavericks erased a 2-1 Americans lead scoring two unanswered goals in the second frame to grab a 3-2 lead. The Americans had a couple of power play chances to tie the game in the final period but were unable to cash in, dropping their fourth straight game to Missouri.

"This game will be a tough one to swallow," said Americans forward Greger Hanson. "We played well enough to win, but a couple of big mistakes cost us. The game was there for the taking, and we let it slip away."

Aaron Gens and Chris Crane both had two-point games for the Americans. Gens goal came on the power play in the second period which gave Allen their first and only lead. Justin Courtnall led Allen with four shots on goal finishing even for the game.

The Americans resume play tomorrow night against another Central Division foe, taking the four hour bus ride to Tulsa for a 7:05 matchup against the Oilers.
