Wheeling Nailers News Release

BRAMPTON, ON- The Wheeling Nailers finished their six-game road trip on Saturday night with a contest that had them riding a wild roller coaster of ups and downs. Wheeling fell behind 3-0 in the first period, rallied back to take a 4-3 lead in the third, surrendered the tying goal with less than one second remaining in regulation, then landed the final blow in overtime. Adam Krause's second goal of the night came at 2:08 of the extra session, lifting the Nailers to the 5-4 win at Powerade Centre, as they completed the trip with a 5-1-0 record.

Unlike the previous night, the start of Saturday's game went anywhere but in favor of the Nailers. Brampton needed just 42 seconds to open the scoring, as Chris Auger took a centering pass from Brandon Marino, and scored from the left side of the slot. 1:09 later, the Beast added to their advantage with a shorthanded goal. Auger poked the puck through neutral ice, allowing Marino to speed onto it for a breakaway. Marino faked to his backhand, then reached a forehand attempt around Casey DeSmith's left pad. DeSmith came up lame after the goal, and proceded to leave the contest with an injury. Brampton netted one more goal later in the period on a seeing-eyed wrist shot by Steven Kaunisto from the left point.

The second period was significantly better for Wheeling, who found the back of the net twice, pulling within one goal. The first tally came at the 10:47 mark on a delayed penalty against the Beast. Riley Brace fed the puck to Adam Krause on the right side of the crease. Krause got Jordan Ruby to lunge forward on a fake, before he lifted a shot over the opposing netminder to put his club on the scoreboard. Cody Wydo also assisted, giving him at least one point in all six games on the trip. With 3:59 remaining, the Nailers potted their second goal. Clark Seymour buzzed a pass through center ice to Connor Leen, who rushed in on the right side, dragging the puck to his forehand before finding the back of the net.

The Nailers continued their comeback in the third period, scoring twice in a span of 1:46 to draw even, then take the lead. The equalizer came from Ty Loney, who slid home a centering pass from Cody Wydo, while Wheeling was playing on the man advantage. The visitors then jumped on top for the first time all night. Jordan Kwas entered the zone with a feed for Paul Cianfrini, who drilled in a shot from the left circle. The Nailers nearly skated away with the regulation win, but a redirection by Scott Jacklin off of Steve Kaunisto's point shot tied the tilt for Brampton with less than one second remaining.

It took 2:08 longer than they hoped, but Wheeling still ended up victorious, as they scored their fourth overtime winner of the campaign. Riley Brace, Clark Seymour, and Adam Krause flew up the ice on a 3-on-1 break, with Brace setting up Krause on the right side of the crease, where he chipped a shot over Ruby's left leg for the deciding marker in a 5-4 triumph for the Nailers.

Franky Palazzese picked up his seventh straight road win, making 19 saves on 21 shots in relief of Casey DeSmith, who left with an early injury. Jordan Ruby took the shootout loss for Brampton, allowing five goals on 36 shots.

The Nailers will return for three games on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Friday is a Flat Screen Friday, presented by The Highlands and Bordas & Bordas, in addition to a Frosty Friday. Saturday is Disney Night, starring Corey Fogelmanis, who plays the character "Farkle" from Girl Meets World. That night will also be Pink in the Rink, while also featuring a Wine Tasting Event. Sunday is a Family Funday. Thanks to McDonald's, kids tickets are $5 for that afternoon's tilt, and there will be a post game skate with the team.
