Cyclones Hold off Mallards 5-3

MOLINE, Ill. - Jack Downing scored two goals and added an assist as the Cincinnati Cyclones (26-20-5) held off the host Quad City Mallards (24-22-5) to claim a 5-3 win Saturd ay night .

With the loss the Mallards drop to fourth place in the ECHL's Midwest Division and ninth place in the Western Conference.

Downing and the Cyclones jumped on the Mallards early. Downing opened the scoring from the slot at 3:47 of the first period and struck again a minute and 21 seconds later from the top of the left wing circle during a Cyclone power play.

The Mallards' Matt Carey cut the deficit to 2-1 with a wrist shot from the top of the right wing circle at 9:48 of the first but the Cyclones responded just 19 seconds later when Joe Pendenza scored from the slot.

The Mallards again pulled within a goal with Jared Knight's power play one timer at 7:36 of of the third period but, with the Cyclones on the man advantage, Zach Budish would reply from close range with what proved to be the game winner at 11:54 of the third.

Kyle Follmer's tip-in cut the margin to a single goal for a third time for the Mallards with just over two minutes left in the game. However, Tommy Mele clinched victory for Cincinnati by scoring an empty net goal with 22 seconds remaining.

The Mallards return to action next Friday night at 7:05 p.m. on home ice against the Rapid City Rush. Next Friday also brings the return of $1 Dog/$1 Beer Night presented by 97X and MetroLINK College Night.
