Cameron's Overtime Heroics Leads Rays to 4-3 Win at Greenville

GREENVILLE, SC - Brett Cameron scored 58 seconds into overtime to extend his point streak to nine games and earn the South Carolina Stingrays (28-17-4-2) their first overtime win of the season, 4-3, over the Greenville Swamp Rabbits (24-20-7-0) Saturday night at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena. The victory was South Carolina's second straight win on the road at Greenville. The two teams play for the fourth time this week tomorrow afternoon in North Charleston.

Greenville's Ryan Rashid scored a pair of goals for the Swamp Rabbits in the opening period to give Greenville a 2-0 lead. His first tally came at 3:54 to make it 1-0. He accepted a Darien Dziurzynski pass and raced past the Stingrays defense. He beat Stingrays goaltender Mark Dekanich with a backhand shot for his eighth goal of the season.

Rashid would score again, notching his ninth goal of the season on a beautiful play at 9:02 to make it 2-0 Greenville.

Trailing 2-0 entering the second period, it didn't take long for South Carolina to start a comeback. Stephan Vigier scored his third goal of the weekend and 15th of the season to cut the lead to 2-1. The power play tally came on a rebound off a Bobby Shea shot from the point.

At 6:45, Stingrays forward Caleb Herbert would tie the game with his third goal of the season. A mad scramble ensued in front of Greenville goaltender Mackenzie Skapski, and with the netminder down and out of position, Patrick Gaul fired a cross-ice pass to Herbert. Camped on the left wing, Herbert blasted a one-time shot that found the back of the net to make it 2-2.

South Carolina wasn't finished in the second. Jared Staal scored his eighth goal of the season at 9:23. Brandon Magee fired a shot from the point to the goal. Skapski made the initial save, but Staal collected the rebound and tucked it past the goaltender's pad to make it 3-2 South Carolina.

The Swamp Rabbits would tie the game in the third period as Josh Nicholls won a race to a loose puck down the left wing side. He cut in on goal and fired a shot that rolled through the pads of Dekanich to make it 3-3 at 9:35.

South Carolina entered the evening as the only team in the ECHL without an overtime victory. The Stingrays were 0-4 in the extra session before Cameron's game-winning goal Saturday night. On the winning tally, the Stingrays rushed up ice and fed Cameron on the right side. He got Skapski to drop to the ice, but the forward didn't have a clean shot at the net. He skated behind the goal, catching Skapski turned around. Cameron banked a shot off Skapski's back leg and into the net to earn the Stingrays the win.

Dekanich stopped 42 shots, earning a victory for the sixth time in his last seven starts. Greenville outshot South Carolina 45-41.

South Carolina returns home to battle the Swamp Rabbits for Mascot Mania at 3:05 p.m tomorrow.
