Jackals Fire 50 Shots on Goal But Fall to Fielding, Thunder, 3-1
February 20, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Elmira Jackals News Release
ELMIRA, NY - For the fourth consecutive game the Jackals have recorded 40 or more shots on goal and for the second time in the last four games they have recorded 50 or more shots on target, but Drew Fielding's career night sent the Jackals to a 3-1 defeat. Matt Garbowsky scored the lone Jackals goal and Justin Bernhardt's assist extended his point streak to five games. C.J. Motte turned aside 26 of 29 shots faced.
The Thunder struck for two quick goals in the opening four minutes of play with Michael Kirkpatrick's team-leading 20th goal of the season and Louick Marcotte's ninth goal of the season. First, Kirkpatrick was the beneficiary of a point shot blocked in front deflecting the puck to him with time to pull it past Motte for the opening tally. Mike Busillo and Quinn Smith earned the assists. Just 46 seconds later a turnover deep in the Jackals' end resulted in Louick Marcotte having time to out-wait a sprawling Motte and tuck his ninth of the season into the net. However, the Jackals didn't wait long to answer. At 5:20, Kyle Stroh won an offensive zone face-off with the help of Justin Bernhardt tapping it back to Matt Garbowsky for the quick release sniping the top corner with his third goal of the season.
In the second period, the Thunder earned an early power-play and capitalized as Louick Marcotte scored his second goal of the night and 10th of the season, stretching Adirondack's lead back to two goals. That marker at 2:52 of the middle frame turned out to be the last goal scored in the contest. The Jackals provided relentless pressure in the offensive end creating countless scoring chances and generating a plethora of shots on net but Drew Fielding stood tall for the Thunder. He also proved to be their best penalty killer helping kill off all six Jackals' power-plays.
Elmira entered the third period with 34 shots on goal and continued to fire away at Fielding adding 16 shots to the total in the third period but the Thunder netminder kept turning them away. The Jackals out-shot the Thunder 16-3 in the third period and 50-29 overall, but fell in a hard-fought 3-1 defeat.
C.J. Motte turned aside 26 of 29 shots faced but suffered the loss. Drew Fielding set a career high with 49 saves, topping his previous career high of 43 set last night, to earn the win.
