The rivalry matchup between the No.1 Mavericks and No.2 Americans (Western Conference) got off to a speedy start with Mavericks leading goal-scorer, Jesse Root, scoring just 57 seconds into play, unassisted. The Americans answered back just 29 seconds later, tying the game 1-1 via right wing Tristan King .
The visiting team took a brief 2-1 lead at 6:18 of the second frame when Aaron Gens scored a power-play goal for Allen with the help of Greger Hanson and former Mavs winger, Chris Crane. Then defenseman Bryce Aneloski tied it up for the Mavericks during a man-advantage situation at 8:43. Kellen Jones and Jesse Root assisted on the play.
The Mavericks found themselves in a short-handed situation towards the end of the second period, with Jones in the box for a hooking call. During the penalty kill, Allen goaltender Joel Rumpel was caught far out of his goal crease, and Josh Holmstrom capitalized with an unobstructed and unassisted goal for a 3-2 Missouri lead.
Both teams battled through the third period with not change in the scoreboard until the final minutes of regulation, when defenseman Pat Cullity -back in his first game with the Mavericks since his call-up to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (AHL), scored an empty-net goal to secure a 4-2 win for the home team.
Parker Milner made 28 saves through a full 60 minutes between the pipes for the Mavericks. His record improves to 12-3-0-0 with a 1.73 goals-against average (GAA) and a .936 save percentage (SV%).
The Mavericks play their next two games at home, facing-off against the Evansville IceMen on Saturday, Feb. 20 (7:05p.m.) and Sunday, Feb. 21 (4:05p.m.) at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena.
