Falcons Come Up Short
October 27, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Fresno Falcons News Release
ANCHORAGE â The Fresno Falcons lost the rubber match of a three-game series with the Alaska Aces tonight by a score of 3-2, dropping the club to a record of 2-2-0 to begin the 2003-04 season. The loss followed a 2-1 Falcons victory on Friday in game one of the three-game set and a 6-3 defeat last night.
For the second consecutive game Alaska got off to a fast start, but Fresno goaltender Nolan Schaefer stood tall in the early going, stopping the first 11 shots he faced, many of which came on three successive Aces power plays. Moments after failing to convert on that third power play, though, Mike Lee beat Schaefer from right on the door step for his first of the season at 14:40 of the opening period. Late in the frame with the Falcons on their first man advantage of the evening, Fresno captain Jason Weaver banged home a rebound for his second of the season as the teams went into the locker room tied at one despite the Aces having a 15-6 edge in shots on goal.
The Aces would take their second one-goal lead of the evening by finally breaking through on the power play as Jordan Cameron beat Schaefer from the slot at 15:44 of the second for the only goal of the second period.
Still trailing by a goal mid-way through the third, Kris Porter fired home a one-time slapshot with the Falcons on a 5-on-3 advantage to pull his club even at two at 9:03 of the frame. Alaska would gain a two-man advantage minutes later. They failed to convert but on the ensuing 5-on-4 Charles Linglet fed Mark Smith for a one-timer of his own for the eventual game-winner at 13:36.
Fresno was able to pull Schaefer in favor of an extra attacker for well over a minute in the game's waning moments but came up short in its attempt to even the game at three.
The Falcons now turn their attention to a showdown next Saturday night with the expansion Las Vegas Wranglers as they continue an 11-game road trip to begin the 2003-04 season. They do not make their ECHL debut at home until Sunday, Nov. 16, at 5 p.m. against the Bakersfield Condors at Save Mart Center at Fresno State.
Single-game tickets for the entire 36-game home slate at Save Mart Center are on sale now and begin as low as $8. Order by phone at 485-TIXS, online by clicking the Ticketmaster icon at www.fresnofalcons.com or at any Ticketmaster location.
