Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska âMark Smith snapped home a one-timer with 6:24 left that proved to be the game-winner as Alaska allowed Fresno just 16 shots in a 3-2 victory before 3,064 Sunday night at Sullivan Arena.
The Aces (2-1) registered 12 of the game's first 13 shots on goal before Mike Lee scored what proved to be the only even strength goal of the night at 14:40 of the opening period. A product of East High in Anchorage, Lee had scored just two goals in 63 games for Columbus last year. Fresno tied the game 1-1 with 21.6 seconds left in the period after a flurry in front of the net, with Jason Weaver finally scoring his 14th goal in his last 15 games against the Aces.
Jordan Cameron notched his first goal as a professional late in the second period with Alaska in the midst of another power play, tucking a backhander past Falcons goaltender Nolan Schaefer at 15:44. Fresno took advantage of a five-on-three opportunity midway through the third period as Kris Porter ripped a slapshot just underneath the crossbar at 9:03 to deadlock the score at 2-2.
But the power play scenario evened out moments later, as the Aces were awarded a two-man advantage, and though the Falcons killed off one penalty, Charles Linglet's perfect cross-ice feed to Smith in the right circle resulted in the 3-2 lead that stood up behind a stifling defense. Fresno (2-2) had yet another power play later in the period and pulled Schaefer with more than a minute left in regulation, but did not manage a shot on goal over the final three minutes with the game on the line.
The Aces next battle the Peoria Rivermen (2-1-1), who will be making the 3,717-mile trip to Anchorage, in the opener of a three-game series Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. The teams will take Thursday off and complete the series with Friday and Saturday night tilts at 7:00 p.m. All Alaska games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.alaskaaces.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
