San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO â Don't let the standings fool you. The San Diego Gulls have only played two games, fewer than any other club in the ECHL. One of those games came last week, a 2-1 loss in Bakersfield. But the Gulls look to rebound with... wait stop the presses... two games this week!
WEEK IN REVIEW:
Coming off a 1-0 shutout win over the Condors on opening night, the Gulls were certainly coming into Friday night's re-match in a good mood. On the opposite end, the Condors were 0-3-0, scoring only two goals in that span. Needless to say, head coach Paul Kelly wasn't happy with his troops. But didn't someone once say that the struggling teams are the most dangerous teams?
Oct. 24 @ Bakersfield:
Things started out great for the Gulls, thanks to Billy Tibbetts' goal midway through the first period. San Diego would carry its 1-0 lead through two periods. The Condors caught fire (no pun intended for San Diegans) early in the third however and took the lead, which they did not relinquish. Quinn Fair evened the game with power-play goal at 4:13. Just 2:02 later, Denis Ladouceur cashed in the game-winner.
Rookie goaltender David Burleigh made his professional debut, stopping 26 shots in a losing effort. He got the start after Trevor Koenig was placed on injured reserve with a sore groin...
THIS WEEK:
The Gulls wrap up their first road trip of the season Tuesday in Las Vegas, game time at 7 p.m. San Diego opens its home schedule Saturday against the Idaho Steelheads at 7:05 p.m.
The first 10,000 fans at the home opener will get their very own pair of Gulls Thunder Sticks, courtesy of 4-Lawyer.com. And in honor of Halloween, it's going to be a blackout...so all fans are encouraged to dress in ALL BLACK to show their Halloween spirit! Kids 14 and under can wear their costumes and "Trick-or-Treat" on the outer concourse during the game! And, your favorites from KGB 101.5 FM will be there to keep everyone entertained all game long.
Saturday's game will also be televised live on Channel 4 San Diego. All games can be heard on AM1360-KPOP with Chris Ello calling the play-by-play.
TEAM NOTES:
The Gulls are 0 for 12 on the power play in their first two games... They've allowed one power-play goal in 15 chances... After a three-game schedule in October, San Diego will play 13 games in November... Dating back to the 2001-02 season, the Gulls have lost only three times when leading after two periods...
PLAYER NOTES:
Koenig will be able to return for Tuesday's game in Las Vegas... Dennis Purdie should also be back, after sitting out the first two games with a sinus infection...
TRANSACTIONS:
Defenseman Bryan Vines was traded to the Long Beach Ice Dogs last week for future considerations... Rookie forward George Davis was recalled by the American Hockey League's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks...
