Aces Cautiously Optimistic: Go 2-1

October 27, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Alaska Aces took two of three from the Fresno Falcons over the weekend and now look forward to an inter-conference series with Peoria, who will be making the 3,717-mile trip to Anchorage.

After a tough 2-1 loss on Opening Night where Alaska outshot Fresno 34-21 but was stymied by Falcons goaltender Nolan Schaefer, the Aces bounced back Saturday, racing to a 5-0 lead and cruising to a 6-3 victory. Charles Linglet and Mike Scott each scored twice as the Aces chased Fresno starter Terry Friesen, who departed at the 8:26 mark of the second period after surrendering five goals on 16 shots. Alaska gained revenge on Schaefer in the series finale Sunday, limiting the Falcons to only 16 shots and scoring twice on the power play, including Mark Smith's game-winning one-timer with 6:24 remaining in the third period that snapped a 2-2 tie.

The Aces converted five of 17 power play chances over the weekend (29.4%) and currently rank fourth among 31 ECHL teams in that category. Goaltender Dan Murphy collected his 100th professional victory with 24 saves Saturday and needed to make just 14 in grabbing number 101 the following night. Alaska will be looking to change recent history this week against Peoria; the club has waited until at least the 12th game of the regular season to pick up its third win since 1998. But at 2-1, the Aces currently reside in third place, trailing first-place Las Vegas by three points, although the Wranglers already have played five games.

Four Alaska players will be appearing at Williwaw Elementary tomorrow at 1:45 p.m. as part of the "Skate into Reading" program in the Anchorage area. Scott, Ryan Moren, Shane Palahicky, and Nolan Graham are the four players scheduled to be in attendance.

The Rivermen will arrive in Anchorage Monday night with a 2-1-1 record to over their first four games. The three-game series opens Wednesday at 7:00 p.m., with the teams taking Thursday off before lining up Friday and Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. All Alaska games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.alaskaaces.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
