Checkers trade Rodney to Stockton for Slonina and Lang

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte Checkers announced that the team has traded defenseman Bryan Rodney and future considerations to the Stockton Thunder in exchange for forward Stephen Slonina and defenseman Jeff Lang. The trade between the two teams occurred earlier today, prior to the ECHL trade deadline which expired at 3 p.m. ET today.

Slonina, 25, has skated in 55 games this season with Stockton notching 10 goals and 17 assists with 48 penalty minutes. Last season the native of Abington, Mass. split time between Stockton and the Greenville Grrrowl, playing 69 games total with 22 goals, 23 assists and 48 penalty minutes.

Following four seasons at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell, the 5-foot-11-inch, 195-pound forward played two games in 2003 with the Lowell Lock Monsters of the American Hockey League. In 69 games with the Gwinnett Gladiators during the 2003-04 season, Slonina netted 20 goals and 17 assists with 73 penalty minutes. During the 2004-05 season, he skated in 51 games with the Toledo Storm registering eight goals, 11 assists and 50 penalty minutes.

Lang, 24, has played in 46 games for the Thunder this season. The 5-foot-11-inch, 192-pounder has recorded four goals and 11 assists with 51 penalty minutes this season. Originally from Westwood, Mass., he is in his second professional season.

Last season Lang split time between Toledo and Stockton of the ECHL and appeared in one game with the Cleveland Barons of the AHL. During his 68 ECHL games in 2005-06, he recorded seven goals, 32 assists and 48 penalty minutes. Prior to his professional career, Lang played four seasons at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. In 120 games he recorded seven goals, 20 assists and 93.

Rodney, 22, skated in 31 games with the Checkers this season. The second-year pro registered two goals, 19 assists and 14 penalty minutes with a plus/minus rating of +1 this season. The 6-foot, 204-pound blueliner played in 59 games with the Checkers last season recording four goals, 21 assists and 47 penalty minutes.

Originally from London, Ontario, Rodney was a member of the 2004-05 London Knights of the OHL which went 59-7-2 during the regular season and won the OHL Championship and Memorial Cup. Rodney spend time in the OHL with the Kinston Frontenacs (2001-2004) and the Ottawa 67's (2000-2002).

The Checkers are back at home Thursday and Sunday.
