Wildcatters Acquire Defenseman and Goaltender at Deadline

March 7, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Texas Wildcatters News Release

Phoenix, AZ (March 7, 2007) Wildcatters Head Coach and Vice President of Hockey Operations Malcolm Cameron announced the team has acquired defenseman Derick Martin from the Columbia Inferno and was assigned goaltender Danny Taylor from the Los Angeles Kings.

In order to obtain Martin, Texas traded defenseman James Sanford to the Utah Grizzlies in exchange for forward Brendan Cook. Then, Cook was traded to Columbia for Martin.

Martin, 25, skated in 57 games for Columbia this season, scoring two goals and registering 13 assists for 15 points and 46 penalty minutes. The 5'11'' native of Timmins, ON played in 71 games last season in Long Beach under Coach Cameron. He scored two goals and had 15 helpers. Martin began his professional career in the CHL with Lubbock. He attended St. Mary's University and started his career with the Hull Olympiques of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

"Martin is a warrior, extremely physical, tough to play against and an excellent penalty killer," said Cameron. "The tougher the game, the more he excels. I am excited to have him again for the playoff run."

Goaltender Danny Taylor comes from Wheeling where he played in one game this season. Taylor, 20, was selected by the Los Angeles Kings in the seventh round (#221 overall) of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

"I saw him first hand at the Kings Rookie camp two years ago," said Cameron. "He's an energetic, athletic young goaltender who will take some of the pressure off of Matt who has been overworked as of late."

The 6'1'' native of Plymouth, England spent the last three seasons in the Ontario Hockey League with Guelph and Kingston going a combined 61-33-12.
