Condors Sneak By Grizzlies In Shootout, 2-1
March 7, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Bakersfield Condors News Release
WEST VALLEY CITY, UT. - For the third time in four games on the road trip, the Bakersfield Condors went to a shootout, this time coming up with a win as they edged the Utah Grizzlies, 2-1, Wednesday night, in front of 2,629 at The E Center. The win reduced the Condors magic number for clinching a playoff berth to just two points.
After Kevin St. Jacques tied the shootout with a goal in round four, Todd Griffith scored in round six, and Jamie Hodson preserved the win by stopping Blake Robson, the fifth shooter out of six that Hodson denied.
"I think we had a bit of a let down from the weekend, but we still played well," said Condors head coach Marty Raymond. "Hodson had an outstanding game for us and we are happy to have the win."
Former Condor Danny Stewart put Utah (21- 31-6, 48 points) up 1-0 at 6:29 of the first, when he stole the puck from Jamie Hodson on the backboards and banked it off Reagan Leslie and into the vacated net.
Bakersfield (34-13-10, 78 points) struck back at 13:58 of the second, when Brett Lutes jammed home a centering feed from Andew Ianiero to tie the game 1- 1. It was Lutes' second goal in as many games, and his 24th of the campaign, tying him with Griffith and Josh Liebenow for the team lead.
Both teams had chances the rest of the way in regulation, but neither could score and the Condors went more than 60 minutes for the fifth straight game and ninth time in their last 12 games. When nobody was able to score in the overtime, it went to a shootout for the fourth time in the last five games overall.
Notes: The Condors acquired defenseman Ryan Van Buskirk from the Florida Everblades for future considerations. Forward Kevin Asselin was sent to the Columbia Inferno for financial considerations. The Condors are now 2-0-2 on the road trip and 4-1-0 against Utah this season.
After a day off Thursday, Bakersfield resumes the series in Utah with games on Friday and Saturday, both starting at 6:05 p.m.
The team returns to The Nest on March 17th for a game against the Stockton Thunder, as Bright House Networks, 101.5 KGFM and American Business Machines present SpongeBob Squarepants and the St. Patrick's Day Jersey Raffle and Auction. SpongeBob will be live and in person to entertain the crowd, plus five lucky fans will win special game-worn St. Patrick's Day jerseys, with proceeds from the auction donated to Kern Adult Literacy Council.
