Aces Face Crucial Weekend

November 11, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska. – The Anchorage Aces will be looking to gain ground on the rest of the WCHL with five home games in six nights beginning this Friday against San Diego.

Anchorage has taken advantage of an 11-day break in its schedule to meet with individual players as well as tinker with its roster. Thursday, the Aces signed six-foot, 190-pound forward Kevin McNeill, who played four years at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks between 1996-2000. In 137 career games for the Nanooks, he earned a reputation as a defensively accountable two-way player while scoring 20 goals and adding 23 assists. McNeill and the rest of the Anchorage club will resume practicing at Sullivan Arena tomorrow through Thursday from 10:00 a.m.—Noon.

The Aces (2-9) broke a franchise record-tying seven-game losing streak with a 4-3 win at Fresno in their last outing November 4. Anchorage has yet to face San Diego, which dropped to 5-5-1 after a 4-2 loss at home to Idaho Saturday. The Gulls square off in a home match against Fresno Tuesday arriving at Sullivan for Friday's series opener at 7:00 p.m. The Aces were 2-6 against San Diego last year and are just 15-40-6 (.295) in the overall series, which continues Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday at 5:00 p.m. Yvan Corbin, who scored twice in the victory over the Falcons, still leads the WCHL in scoring at 16 points and is tied for the league lead with nine goals. Dean Larson, who tonight will appear on "Alaska Sports Insider" on Channel 13 immediately after "Monday Night Football," remains one point behind Corbin in the scoring race with 15, while his 10 assists also rank second in the WCHL. Linemate Carl Drakensjo remains tied for fifth in the league with a +5 rating despite playing for a club that has been outscored 52-26. Defenseman Ryan Moren sets the pace among all WCHL rookies with five assists.
