Gulls Drop to Third Place

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Gulls (5-5-1) only played one game last week, which they dropped to the Idaho Steelheads Saturday night. With the loss and the light schedule, San Diego is now in third place in the West Coast Hockey League, one point behind second-place Bakersfield and six points behind front-running Idaho.

The Blue and Orange have never been at the 500-mark this far into a season... R.J. Enga comes into this week tied for third in WCHL scoring with 14 points... Mark Pederson, who's six-game point streak ended Saturday, is second on the team with 11 points and remains atop the league leaders with four game-winning goals... Mike Garrow is first among WCHL defensemen with five goals...

TRANSACTIONS:

Goaltender Curtis Cruickshank has been practicing with the team and is expected to sign before Tuesday's game against the Fresno Falcons... Dennis Mullen will sit out the second game of a two-game suspension Tuesday night... Clint Cabana is officially lost for the season with a separated right shoulder... Marc Busenburg and Rob Voltera remain with the American Hockey League's Hershey Bears... COMMUNITY UPDATE: Nov. 1: The Gulls hosted their fifth annual "Jerseys Off Their Back" auction. Gulls fans had the opportunity to bid on special game-worn jerseys that featured both the Gulls and Make-A-Wish Foundation logos. Approximately $7,000 was raised for Make-A-Wish, and the proceeds will go towards granting the wishes of San Diego children.

Nov. 29: The Gulls will host their third annual Teddy Bear Toss to benefit "Hope for the Holidays." All fans are encouraged to bring teddy bears to toss onto the ice after the Gulls score their first goal of the game. The teddy bears will be collected and donated to "Hope for the Holidays," a national charity to benefit underprivileged children. LAST WEEK:

GULLS 2, Idaho 4; at San Diego, Saturday, Nov. 9: Chris Marinucci and Joe Rybar each scored three points, while Jason Cugnet turned aside 33 shots to lead Idaho to its 4-2 victory. The Steelheads jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the Gulls netted two in a 1:28 span, cutting the margin to one. Dean Tiltgen scored at 7:56 of the second and then Garrow deflected a Steelheads pass behind Cugnet at 9:24. However, Marty Flichel's second tally of the night late in the middle frame preserved the Idaho win.

THIS WEEK:

San Diego hosts Fresno Tuesday at 7 p.m. before embarking on a four-game road trip, starting this weekend in Anchorage. The Gulls play the Aces Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. (PST) and Sunday at 6 p.m. (PST). The Blue and Orange finish the trip in Fresno on Tuesday, Nov. 19.
