Bombers Inch Toward .500 Mark
November 11, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Dayton Bombers News Release
Dayton Bombers Professional Hockey Team recorded two more road wins this past week against teams from the Northeast Division, pulling to within one game of the .500 mark (5-6-2). The Bombers, who are 4-0-2 in their last six and 3-0-1 in their last four, will close out a five-game road stretch and a three-game swing of Northeast Division opponents on Tuesday at Trenton before coming home to host divisional foes Wheeling and Toledo for 7:30 p.m. games Friday and Saturday. Below is a recap of this past week's games:
11/8/02- BOMBERS 4 @ Reading 1
Andrew Ianiero scored a goal and two assists in his debut as a professional hockey player, while Torrey DiRoberto scored twice as the Dayton Bombers topped the Reading Royals, who were tied for first place in the Northeast Division going into the game. Rookie defenseman Tyler Sloan notched his first professional goal on the power play in the second period, while first-year forward Ben Knopp recorded his first two professional points on assists. Shane Bendera made 29 saves to improve to 3-2-1 and the Bombers won the special teams war, going 1-6 on the power play and 7-7 on penalty kills against the league's best home power play unit entering the contest. The Bombers prevailed in the teams' lone head-to-head encounter of the 2002-2003 regular season.
11/9/02- BOMBERS 2 @ Atlantic City 1 (SO)
In a rematch of the 2002 Kelly Cup Northern Conference Final series, the Bombers edged the Boardwalk Bullies 2-1 in a shootout. Atlantic City jumped in front 1-0 in the first period at 12:57 on a goal by J.F. Caudron. Thanks to some fine goaltending by the Bombers Andrew Allen, the game remained scoreless until the third period, when both Andrew Williamson and Chris M. Thompson jabbed at a loose puck in front of the Atlantic City net. Ultimately, Chris M. Thompson chipped the puck past goalie Scott Stirling to tie the game at 6:34. Jamie Ling, who ushered the puck to the net, and Williamson assisted on the goal. After a scoreless overtime, the teams played a shootout. Each team tallied twice in the first five rounds (Thompson and Tom Nemeth scored for the Bombers), setting the stage for the sudden death portion of the shootout. In the sixth round, Ryan Vince converted for the Bombers, while Bombers goalie Andrew Allen denied rookie Jim Henkel's chance to preserve the win. Allen made a team season-best 39 saves, while the Bombers killed off all eight Atlantic City power play chances en route to besting the best from the Northeast Division.
BOMBER BITES: The Bombers went a perfect 15 for 15 on penalty kills during a 2-0-0 week ... Winger Torrey DiRoberto scored four goals in a three-game span from 11/2 through 11/8 ... The Bombers' goaltending duo of Andrew Allen and Shane Bendera are each 2-0-1 in their last three starts during the team's six-game unbeaten streak (4-0-2) ... For the second time this season, defenseman Tyler Sloan was recalled to AHL Syracuse this past week ... Goalie Shane Bendera leads the ECHL in goals-against average (1.29) and save percentage (.954) entering the week ... After Tuesday's game, the Bombers will return home to face Wheeling on Friday, November 15, kicking off a stretch in which the Bombers play six straight home games and seven of eight at the Ervin J.
