Worcester Red Sox News Release

WORCESTER, M.A. - One night after the Worcester Red Sox (43-40, 4-4) crushed seven long balls, the Syracuse Mets (35-47, 2-6) held the home team to just one run on Thursday, a 6-1 final at Polar Park.

WooSox starter Rio Gomez tied the longest outing of his Triple-A career, going five innings and allowing two earned runs with five strikeouts. The left-hander went out for the sixth, but exited with the training staff after a warmup pitch, favoring his left leg.

Syracuse got its runs off Gomez thanks to a pair of former WooSox in the second. Abraham Almonte and Jaylin Davis smashed back-to-back home runs to left-last year, the two combined for 14 homers in Worcester uniforms.

The WooSox got one back in the sixth, a threat that began with an opposite field double to left by Nick Sogard. One pitch later, Enmanuel Valdez laced a 104 mile-per-hour single off the wall in right, plating Sogard to make it a 2-1 game.

Since returning from the injured list three days ago, Valdez has seven hits, two home runs and four RBI.

After Chase Shugart tossed a scoreless sixth, Syracuse broke it open in the seventh against the right-hander. Luke Ritter crushed a three-run home run to extend the road team's lead to 5-1, followed by two singles. Shugart departed, and one more run would score on a wild pitch by Brendan Nail.

Nail would deliver a runless eighth and Cam Booser would do the same in the ninth, but Worcester mustered just five total hits in their first defeat of the week.

The WooSox continue the six-game series Friday at 6:45 p.m. at Polar Park against the Syracuse Mets. On the mound, Norwith Gudino (2-4, 6.11) faces Alex Valverde (2-2, 7.88). Television coverage is on NESN+, while radio coverage is live at 6:25 p.m. on 98.9 Nash Icon and the WooSox Radio Network.
