Norfolk Tides News Release
Minor League Baseball today announced the International League's Player and Pitcher of the Month Awards for June. Norfolk Tides pitcher Grayson Rodriguez was named Pitcher of the Month while Durham's infielder Jonathan Aranda was named Player of the Month.
In five starts during the month, Rodriguez went 4-0 with a 2.22 ERA (7 ER, 28.1 IP). He allowed a .185 average and a 1.06 WHIP, while striking out 39 batters to 12 walks. He was one of two pitchers with four wins during the month while leading the league in strikeouts. Of 17 International League pitchers with at least 26.0 innings pitched, Rodriguez led the league in ERA, second in opponent's average and sixth in WHIP.
Rodriguez became the 13th Tide in Orioles affiliate franchise history to record four wins in a calendar month and the first since Joe Gunkel (June, 2016). He also ranked among the best franchise calendar month totals since 2007 in strikeouts per nine (2nd, 12.39), strikeouts (T-4th) and opponent's average (T-10th).
It's the second time in Rodriguez' career he's won International League Pitcher of the Month, with the other happening May of 2022. He also won Pitcher of the Week in that month for May 23 - 29. Grayson's efforts went on to earn him a 2022 Post-Season All-Star Selection, becoming the first starter in franchise history as an Orioles affiliate to do so.
On Tuesday night, July 4 at Durham, Grayson struck out 12 Bulls to tie a career-high (Game 1 on July 18, 2021 with Bowie at Erie) while not walking a batter. The most recent Tide to record that many strikeouts with no walks was Mike Baumann (August 31, 2022 vs. Lehigh Valley, 13 SO). The final punch out that night was Grayson's 150th of his Tides career, becoming the 18th Tide in Orioles affiliate franchise history to reach that Rmark.
