Martini, Bats Tally Seven Extra-Bats En Route to 9-5 Win

TOLEDO, OH - With fourteen hits, seven going for extra bases, the Louisville Bats (43-39) cruised to a 9-5 victory over the Toledo MudHens (37-46), taking their first win of the series on Thursday night at Fifth Third Field.

Louisville started off with a bang when Nick Martini smashed a lead-off home run on the fifth pitch of the game. His ninth of the year, Martini's longball put the Bats ahead 1-0 in the top of the first.

In the top of the second, Jose Barrero knocked his third homer of the year and the second Bats dinger of the game, putting Louisville up 2-0.

Louisville stayed strong through the third, batting around for a five-run inning. Leading off, Martini smacked a triple and later scored on a double by Matt Reynolds to strengthen the Louisville lead at 3-0. Christian Encarnacion-Strand and Jason Vosler continued the effort with a double each, followed up by Barrero's RBI single which brought the score up to 6-0. Back-to-back singles from Chuckie Robinson and Michael Siani drove in another run for the Bats to end the inning with a 7-0 advantage.

The MudHens got on the board in the bottom of the third with back-to-back solo homers for a score of 7-2.

The Bats answered in the top of the next inning, scoring again in the fourth. After leading off the rally with a single, Alejo Lopez scored on a double by Reynolds, his second of the game, to make it 8-2.

Toledo fought back in the bottom of the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, combining three solo home runs to cut the Louisville lead down to three at 8-5.

In the top of the eighth, Michael Siani drew a walk and Martini recorded an RBI single to score another for Louisville and bring its lead back up to 9-5.

Alan Busenitz (2-1, 2.17) came on to shut down the Toledo lineup, throwing the eighth and ninth innings without allowing a hit or run while striking out two and walking two to earn the win.

Nick Martini's went 3-for-6 on the night, tallying a triple, home run, two RBI and two runs, finishing a double shy of the cycle to lead the Bats to their first win of the series.

The Bats will play game four against Toledo tomorrow, Friday, July 7 with the first pitch set for 7:05 pm E.T. Louisville righthander Michael Mariot (3-0, 2.59) will aim for his fourth win this season as he takes on MudHens lefty Jack O'Loughlin (1-1, 4.30).
