Garlick's Three-Run Homer Not Enough in 5-3 Loss to I-Cubs

St. Paul Saints News Release

DES MOINES, IA - All of a sudden, the St. Paul Saints bats have gone silent. They managed just two hits on Thursday night at Principal Park and didn't collect one after the third inning. In the first three games of the series, they have just nine hits. The Saints had more hits in each of the first five games in their last series against Gwinnett than the first three games against Iowa combined. It all led to the third consecutive loss for the Saints, 6-3 to the Iowa Cubs. The loss drops the Saints to 6-3 in the second half.

For the third consecutive game, the I-Cubs scored first as Matt Mervis hit a solo homer to right-center, his ninth of the season, making it 1-0.

The teams traded three-run homers in the third. In the top of the inning the Saints took their first lead of the series, getting back-to-back walks by Tony Wolters and Alex De Goti. With two outs Kyle Garlick blasted a three-run homer to left, his ninth of the season, giving the Saints a 3-1 lead.

In the bottom of the inning, the I-Cubs responded. With one out Dom Nuñez singled to center and Yonathan Perlaza ripped a single off the glove of a diving Austin Martin at second putting runners at the corners. Nelson Velazquez followed with a three-run homer to left, his 12th of the season, putting the I-Cubs up 4-3.

From the fourth inning on, the Saints best chance to score came in the sixth when Garlick walked with one out and Gilberto Celestino and Andrew Bechtold walked with two outs to load the bases. After a pitching change, Anthony Prato hit a grounder to third that Chase Strumpf fielded and touched third to end the inning.

The I-Cubs added to their lead in the sixth. Edwin Rios led off with a double to right and Miles Mastrobuoni singled him to third. After a fielder's choice by Sergio Alcántara erased Rios at the plate, but sent Mastrobuoni to third and Alcántara to second, Luis Vazquez made it 5-3 with a high chopper single off the glove of the third baseman Prato.

The same two teams meet in game four of a six-game series on Friday night at Principal Park at 7:08 p.m. The Saints send LHP Dallas Keuchel (0-0, 1.08) to the mound against I-Cubs RHP Hayden Wesneski (1-0, 1.00). The game can be heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
