St. Paul Saints News Release
TOLEDO, OH - St. Paul Saints starter Simeon Woods Richardson had last week off. He was given an opportunity to work on his mechanics in the bullpen and reset himself. It worked. In one of his best outings in nearly two months, Woods Richardson was solid over 4.2 innings as the Saints defeated the Toledo Mud Hens 6-2 on Tuesday night at Fifth Third Field. The win improved the Saints to a franchise record 13-games over .500, 41-28.
The Saints extended their home run streak to 24 games, tied with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies for the longest streak by any team in baseball this season. Chris Williams, who is the reigning International League Player of the Week, started this week off the same way he did last, a solo homer to left, his 13th of the season and seventh in six games to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. The Saints went back-to-back as Jair Camargo drilled a solo homer to left, his 11th of the season making it 2-0. It was the third time this season the Saints have gone back-to-back.
Woods Richardson, meanwhile, got around a one out single in the first with a double play and then a one walk in the second with a fly out and a ground out. The only time he was scored upon was in the third. He retired the first two hitters before Parker Meadows doubled to left center and scored on a single by Nick Solak, cutting the Saints lead to 2-1.
The Saints added to their lead in the fourth when Williams singled to right with one out. Camargo followed with a walk and Anthony Prato made it 3-1 with a single to center as Camargo took third. Elliot Soto then laid down a bunt that scored Camargo as Soto reached when the throw to first by pitcher Zach Logue pulled Andrew Knapp off the bag at first as the Saints grabbed a 4-1 lead.
Woods Richardson retired the side in order in the fourth. In the fifth, he walked the leadoff hitter Andrew Knapp, but got back-to-back strikeouts before being removed for Josh Winder. He finished off the inning by getting a pop out of Meadows. Woods Richardson went 4.2 innings allowing one run on three hits while walking two and striking out four.
The Mud Hens grabbed a run in the seventh courtesy of a solo homer from Brendon Davis, his fifth of the season, making it 4-2. Winder went 2.0 innings allowing a run on two hits while walking one and striking out four.
The Saints added two insurance runs in the ninth. Prato led off with a walk and, with one out, Stevenson doubled him to third. With the infield drawn in, Miranda singled on a high bouncer that went off the glove of a leaping Davis at short as both runs scored making it 6-2.
Patrick Murphy continued his dominance, pitching 2.0 scoreless innings allowing two hits while striking out four to earn his third save. He's allowed one run over his last 23.2 innings pitched.
The Norfolk Tides were rained out on Tuesday. The Saints are 4.5 games back with five games left, while the Tides have six games remaining. The Saints elimination number for the one bid playoff berth in the first half is two.
The same two teams meet in game two of a six-game series on Wednesday afternoon at 11:05 a.m. (CT). The Saints send RHP Randy Dobnak (3-3, 5.51) to the mound against Mud Hens LHP Tarik Skubal (0-0, 0.00). The game can be heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
